Open Thread #75
Los Angeles

010509atlaopenthread.jpgLooks like another beautiful weekend in Los Angeles is coming right up (and a long weekend for a few of us, so that means back to the beach). Any weekend home improvement projects on your list. Nice weather always seems to put these into the "to do later" box...

My god. It's about 25 degrees where I am now. In a few days, the high will only be 14.

Please go frolic about in the warmth on behalf of us east coasters.

As someone from the freezing midwest, I won't be able to be as gracious as the east coasters. If I could I would do a lobotomy on mother nature for her to forget about winter. And no I am not whining about the usual like rain, snow etc. I am talking about the kind of situation in which it rains ice and then as soon as the ground is wet, it gets frozen, and then the same cycle repeats 7 times over one night until my street is a scene from winter olympics skating games with really really bad skaters. Ohh gosh, why did you have to remind us that there is sun and warmth somewhere out there?!

Lovin' it here in SF. Although not looking forward to the water rationing it may result in in the summer...

Planet Blue in Santa Monica is in the midst of a storewide sale, including linens. I just went yesterday and picked up a beautiful pair of embroidered window panels for 60% off.

If your on the Westisde and looking to get new bed linens, its worth popping in.

Does anybody out there have any familiarity with "modular cubes" from the Container Store?

http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=13386&PRODID=60667
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=77952&PRODID=10021331

They come in galvanized steel, enameled steel, and mahogany. I'm seriously considering grouping four of them against a wall to create a less expensive version of DWR's Studio North Modular Shelving (http://www.dwr.com/product/furniture/workspace/shelving/studio-north-modular-shelving-package-option-e.do?sortby=ourPicks). I would put plants on top and books inside. But even though they're much less than DWR's, they're still not cheap, so if anyone has actually bought them, I'd love to hear!

It's the perfect weather! It's why I moved here and why I can't leave.

Has anyone been to the HD Buttercup sale? Is it worth going? They have the best furniture, but it is pricey..

Also, I have just started my first blog about trying to fix up my first house in an eco-friendly, yet inexpensive way. Check it out and give your suggestions in the comments...

The beach??

MY weekend projects are buying lock de-icer (the front door lock for my building froze, so no one could get a key in it). I also need some ski goggles for when I walk the dog because we're expecting -30 tonight.

Couldn't you at least tell us it's smoggy or something in LA?

It was so cold here yesterday they had to close schools for fear some children would lose appendages if exposed to the air for 2 seconds.

I can't imagine 92 right now. Although, I would complain about that being too hot. I'm a 60 degree kind of person.

Matt M.:

Planet Blue is on Main Street between Hill and Marine. It is a women, mens and lifestyle store. Sales are usually twice a year. They are pricey so now is the time to go.

Weego Home is across the street. They aren't having a sale but Asher, the store owner, has a great eye and carries great furniture and housewares.

Have fun!
