The quest for an affordable appliance can always be a daunting one. Over the weekend, we had the opportunity to accompany a friend in their quest which lead to a random location in Santa Ana, the Sears Appliance Outlet. Sears, well known for their appliances, actually has several locations throughout Southern California (Santa Ana, Corona, and Ontario.) These outlet stores carry discontinued or slightly blemished appliances at reduced prices of 15%-50% off retail. They warehouse was filled with aisles and aisles of all types of appliances, some very new, and others in slightly worse condition. However, all the appliances come with the Sears guarantee.

Boo to Sears! When arranging for delivery of appliances to my new and empty home, the Sears delivery people were hours later than they said they would be. I called their delivery hotline and was continuously told that the truck was just a little bit behind and that they would be there in another hour. I waited and waited for literally 8 hours... until 1 o'clock in the morning. I'm sure that at some point they must have known they had no intention of making the delivery, and they could have at least called me to let me know, but no. Worst customer service, worst chain of communication ever.
When I did finally get my delivery the next day (having had to sit for another day in an empty house), the refrigerator was NOT the one I had picked out at the outlet. It was far more scratched and dented than the one I had picked, and there were sticky rings from a pack of soda cans inside the fridge. I sent it back and ordered a cheaper, better fridge from another store. NEVER AGAIN.
I went to the one in Corona and saved 45% for a brand new fridge. Only blemish was a slight dent on the side that you'd have to be looking for specifically to find. It was a great deal, although I chose not to have it delivered. This particular location sub-contracts with a moving company and the quote was not what I wanted. Luckily, my girlfriend's father has a truck and I was able to use that and get the fridge to my apartment. Still very pleased with the transaction.
I just had a bad experience with Sears.com myself when I ordered an air conditioner. It was listed as "in stock" and they notified me for pickup at one of their nearby stores. But when I got there, they said they didn't have the unit I had paid for, was verified to pickup, nor could they provide me with a date (even estimated) for when my order could be fulfilled. The best they could do was tell me it could be possible 15-30 days before they'd even have an idea. How's that for quality service?
It's too bad because Sears products themselves come with good ratings in quality satisfaction. Perhaps I'll have to check out the outlet one day myself and hope for a returned unit.
The outlets are run a bit differently than the regular stores. Outside of the discounts, you get what you see and buy off the floor. The best plan is to transport it yourself.
Scatch and dent is one of the very few ways to get a discount on major appliances as the manufacturers have implemented a form of price control called unilateral pricing.
Manufacturers contract with stores telling them that if they are caught selling below a certain price point, they will stop selling to them completely. Considering a store could loose the entire Sony line or Maytag line or Sub Zero line, these contracts carry a lot of clout.
Be happy there is an outlet.

I've had nothing but great experiences with Sears (the dept. store, not the outlet). After comparison shopping, I've always ended up buying my home appliances from Sears. The salespeople would always work with me to find the lowest-priced models with the features I've desired. No problem with delivery either. In the 3 instances that I've purchased appliances from Sears, the delivery folks have been on schedule, did a thorough (and more importantly, careful) set-up of the appliances. If you want to talk about bad customer service when it comes to appliance purchase and delivery, then you should talk about Best Buy...
1-2 weeks I purchased a stainless steel refrigerator, microwave, stove and dishwasher from Lowe's. A friend told me to check them out because of their prices. I didn't think the prices were too bad and all the deliveries/ transactions seemed pretty seamless and easy. I shopped around in Sears first but wasn't too impressed with their prices so I left. Who would ever think to purchase home appliances from Lowe's. It was a great experience and I'm looking forward to shopping at Lowe's again when I decide to remodel my bathroom.
Waylon - You are lucky you didn't use their delivery company. They sent 2 guys smaller then me to move a Fridge into my 1st floor apartment. (I'm 5'4" and 128lbs).
They tore the linoleum floor and broke off part of my counter (the strip around the side of it). I went rounds with them for months to get it repaired. Everytime they "fixed" it, it was worse. I got tired of having to take time off from work to meet them at my apartment and ended up fixing it myself.
