12 Uses for Baskets around the House

atla-051508-basket02.jpgWe love baskets. Their woven texture and light airy look says summer to us. And with their many colours, weaves and sizes, they're versatile. Here are some ways we use them around the house.

  • To catch paper waste in the bathroom or office.
  • A natural for towels, wet or dry, in the bathroom or use them for beach towels outside.
  • Baskets are often used to hold dirty laundry because their lattice texture keeps it from smelling rank. We suggest lining them if you do so that they don't snag your knit garments
  • Ikea sells baskets that fit into its Expedit Bookcase and which work as drawers.
  • Fit a plant pot inside a basket for a dressier look.
  • A basket can hold newspapers and magazines by a sofa, reading nook; another one can hold them for recycling.
  • A large basket with a lid can substitute for a coffee table or an ottoman.
  • Have a piece of glass cut to fit a shallow basket and use it as a tray.
  • A row of baskets organizes mail or cosmetics, office supplies or games.
  • Slip a basket under a console to hold throws or extra pillows.
  • A basket by the front door can corral your guest's shoes
  • In the winter, a basket holds logs for the fireplace

I just threw out all my woven baskets. They get dusty and are nearly impossible to clean. They snag on everything. They always end up looking shabby and not so chic. I thought they looked great painted all white or black in an Espedit style shelf in someone's living room .... but I'm really completely over them.

I do like natural fabric and nylon baskets though. I have a linen basket/box that I keep under the sink for catching kitchen laundry (hand towels, napkins, rags, etc). And I use the Komplement nylon baskets from Ikea for organizing my bath.

Logs for the fireplace in Los Angeles? You just posted about the ban in March!

"Bad news for those of us who enjoy a wood log or two on the fire during our chillier months here in LA. The South Coast Air Quality Management District board voted unanimously to impose fines on homeowners who burn wood in fireplaces on high-pollution days during winter months.
The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday that fines will run as high as $500 per violation and inspectors will respond to phone complaints. Cleaner natural-gas models are not affected by this new regulation, and the ban is specifically aimed at regions in the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Valley where air pollution is higher because of surrounding mountains."

Baskets have to be really special to interest me, and I'm done with lots of containers for junk. Putting junk in a basket isn't design, isn't organizing, it's just shifting the stuff around.

2 linen baskets at the foot of the bed: one has pjs and extra blankets, and the other one is a temporary spot for the outfit ive worn during the day. whenever i get a chance in the morning, or sometimes after a day or two, i take the basket with worn clothes and separate it with the rest of the laundry. without a temptation to throw clothes on the floor or over a chair, my bedroom actually stays tidy...

I have a Longabarger basket hamper that my mother bought at least twenty years ago. It still looks great and has lots of character. I expect to have it for at least another twenty years.

The apple trivet/basket, the fleece blankie and now a Longaberger reference. Will plug in air fresheners be a post, too?
