AT On... Organizing Reusable Bags In The Kitchen

031809bag-01.jpgRecently, we found ourselves in the reusable grocery bag dilemma--too many bags and where to put them (not to mention figuring out a good way to remember bringing them with us to the store). Our tips and helpful hints after the jump!

  • First, we needed to take an inventory of our reusable bags. Once you have all of the bags in front of you, count to see how many you have. We had somehow accumulated twenty reusable bags (way too many for our simple lifestyle). For us, a good stock is ten, so we whittled them down and kept our favorites.
  • Now that you have your bag number limit, stick to it. When you're out and about, and a reusable bag comes with goodies at an event--just say no. It's also important to follow the one in, one out rule. If you find yourself admiring a reusable bag and want to purchase it, then you'll have to make a decision and donate one from your current collection.
  • Next you'll have to decide where to store the bags so you'll actually remember to use them. We like the Chico Bag because it folds up to fit in your purse (and they have a carabiner to attach to your keychain).
  • Another option is storing the bags close to your shopping list, that way, when you're jotting down what you need from the store, you'll remember to bring your reusable bag.
  • Keep a few in the car. The tricky thing about this option is you'll have to empty your groceries and return the bags back to your car as soon as you're done unloading--otherwise you're likely to forget.
  • Hooks in the entryway are a great place to keep and display your reusable bags (we love Yvestown's colorful display of bags in the entryway).

How many reusable grocery bags do you have and how do you remember to grab them for shopping? Do you have a great way to organize the lot?

I remember to take my reusable bags back to the car by leaving them next to my lunch bag if I'm going to work the next day, or hanging them on my coat rack if I'm not. If it's next to something I have to take with me when I go out, I rarely forget to grab the bag, too.

Ours stay in the cars. We still forget to use t hem more often than not, but we are trying to remember. (At least, with 2 cats and 2 rabbits, litter box patrol rapidly uses up plastic grocery bags...)

I bring one in my purse if i know i'll be going to get groceries. Luckily, I have this otherwise unless space to the right of my sink that I stash my mountain of reuseables.

Right now we have five or six, but a couple of them stay permanently in our car to haul my bf's stuff back and forth from dialysis. The ones in the house hang on hooks inside the pantry & linen closet doors.

I have a purse hook in my coat closet. When I get back from the store, I fold all the bags and put (or shove) them back into their container. They are stored with my purse on the designated hook.

This way, whenever I go to get my purse the bags are close at hand. This works really well for me, and I have only forgotten them once - I didn't put them back on their hook!

I usually remember my bags when I go to get my list. If you have trouble remembering, maybe you could write yourself a reminder on the top of your list, or maybe have a magnet that simply reads "BAGS" that you use to attach your list to the fridge. I usually remember, but now I'd like to make myself a magnet just for fun. Think of the possibilities!

I think it's also a habit thing. I've been using reusables for over 5 years now (I got into it before it was cool, so now I have these "vintage" reusables). I just remember- I keep them stored inside each other , tucked behind my sideboard.

For my husband, though, the reminder "BAGS" would be a good one. He is more likely to use a bag to transport his grad school books than to get groceries!

In Ireland shops have to charge for plastic bags by law, so everybody uses reusable bags. I have canvas reusables and I store them... in my day-to-day bag (handbag / mini-backpack). That way I always have them handy when I find myself in a shop. When I unload them I either fold them back up and put them immediately back into my day-to-day bag or, if they're getting dirty, I toss them in the washing machine. Then I put a clean one in my day-to-day bag instead. (So yes, I also have a stash with my tea-towels).

I've just realised this sounds complicated, but actually it's the best way to do minimal thinking about it, and yet always have a bag when you need one.

1 in the purse, 2 under the sink, the rest in the car.

I keep mine in a vintage trunk by the front door under my coat rack (with backups in the trunk of the car) so it serves as both a storage container and a place to sit when I put on my shoes. Trader Joe's insulated bags are so great!

I have two sil-nylon ones in my purse, the rest in my trunk. when I empty the bags after grocery shopping, I hang them on the doorknob, so I take them back to the car the next time I leave the house.

I keep mine in the trunk of the car. I grab them when I do grocery shopping and then when I am done I make sure to hang them on my door knob so that I have to take them back down to the trunk. Very simple.

I'm with those who keep them in the car. I have some grocery store ones (the checkout people like them, because they're designed to fit on the bag rails), a giant IKEA blue bag, and a cute one I use when I go anywhere else.

I unpack right away, and leave the empties next to the stairs so I remember to take them to the car with me next time I go.

My big problem, and maybe some other readers can help with this, is remembering to take them IN to the grocery store. I am constantly running back out to the car to get them (I refuse to compromise and use plastic) and hoping nobody re-shelves all my groceries from the abandoned cart in the meantime!

@ miss_mouse. I've seen folks take a label maker and make a label that reads "remember bags" and stick it onto the steering wheel

I use string market bags (which hold plenty but shrink down to nothing. Three are enough for me, so I hang them from a hook in my kitchen.

I use RuMe bags and they're great to organize because they fold up into a nice little rectangle...and I always have one with me because they're small enough to fit into my purse. Check them out at www.rumebags.com
