Display Your Goodies: Cubbies

081707_cubbies.jpg

Summer's almost over, which means one of two things: school's about to start and the vacations are coming to a close. And while we haven't used a cubby since the early 80s when we were in elementary school, we're happy to see them now as a functional and stylish solution for displaying something besides bagged lunches of tuna fish sandwiches.

We particularly like Kay Unger's unapologetically girly take on the cubby wall (as featured in O at Home): She painted squares of Masonite in various reds and pinks to match her favorite nail polish shades before attaching them (with velcro!) to the back walls of her 200-cubby wall. And while some naysayers will point out that it's just another bookcase, we'd like to counter that cubbies (besides their obvious size discrepancy) are a bit more display-friendly and can give any room a shot of personality. Besides, "cubbies" is just a cool word.
