How To: Organize Makeup

032309_makeup.jpgAs we've mentioned before, we're not big makeup people but we still manage to have enough of it to clutter up the bathroom counter. We don't really like to keep it out, but when it gets used everyday it ends up living there unless we're vigilant about it. What we really need to do is to create a better space for it (like a drawer) and start organizing:

• First off make sure that your makeup hasn't expired. If it has, toss it, it's not worth it, especially with things like mascara to risk using old products.

• If you're using a drawer to throw all your makeup into, drag it all out and sort out the things that you simply never use (yes that electric blue eyeliner would look amazing with the green dress you haven't bought yet, but it's been a couple of years so go ahead and let that dream die).

• If you have a lot of lipsticks that are running out but you still want to use, check out this tip from Domino

• Sort makeup into eyeliners, eyeshadows, foundation, powders, etc.

• Now go around the house or to the kitchen and round up small bowls or boxes that aren't being used and sort makeup into them. Alternatively you can buy fancy organizers that fit your drawer precisely to be most efficient with the space.

• Before you fill the drawers with the bowls, take the time to wipe down the drawer and put in a new pretty liner. Try this removeable wallpaper from Pottery Barn or just a nice piece of wrapping paper. It will help you want to keep the drawer tidy.

• For on the counter displays, we're a bag fan of scientific beakers for wrangling all the brushes and mascaras into something less frou frou than the makeup itself. But any kind of cup that will hold what you need will do the job.

• This is a great time to wash brushes. Just use some mild shampoo and wash them in lukewarm water in the bathroom sink. Let them dry overnight.

• If you have enough supplies to warrant a shelf in the linen closet or have larger storage options in your bathroom, find a set of glasses you like and keep brushes, mascaras and eyeliners in those. Find covered containers that can hold: eyeshadows, blushes, powders, bronzers, etc in their own box to keep them separated. Put only thos things that you use eveyrday into the medicine cabinet or easy-access drawer.

How do you keep makeup wrangled?

A large silverware tray is great for storing makeup in a drawer, too.

It works for me

A train case is also a good way to store makeup--lots of dividers makes it easier to organize a collection neatly.

There are modern, industrial-looking ones (like on this page: http://www.folica.com/Train_Case_413_1.html) and there are always vintage ones going for super-cheap on eBay.

missmay missmay, I second that! Fira is functional and much cheaper than a pro train case but sturdier than the ones they have at target.

If you're a girl with a lot of makeup, you might also be a girl with a lot chocolate, and the sturdy boxes that fancy chocolate comes in. I organized my makeup drawer by throwing in different sized little boxes and sorting out what I use every day, only sometimes, and skin care manicure stuff. I keep the little pieces together in the free-with-purchase makeup bags you get at cosmetic counters.

I must be even more simple with make up than I thought. LOL. My make-up kit consists of just: foundation that works double as concealer, two things of lipstick (one casual and one for more romantic evenings), my compact I use for blush, one eyebrow pencil and only tiny thing with like five or six colors of eye shadow that holds it's own little brush, one thing of mascara, and a few tubes of lipgloss.

Now of course, I prefer the very natural look to looking like some kind of model though...always thought people looked prettier that way. All that fits in one small drawer in my jewelry armoire - LOL - so it's very simple.

I moved my make-up to my linen cupboard, to the eye-level shelf. It has helped because now, every morning, I can see what I own, prompting me to use what I have. On the shelf, I sort things using small woven baskets and glass canning jars.

I just did a major make-up reorganization. I used clear acrylic drawer dividers for larger items, and put brushes and eye liners in cute goblets on my vanity desktop.

Actually, I'll be putting up some pictures on Sunday.

I was just in the container store earlier today and they had a lot of makeup organizing trays- for makeup and eyeliner pencils. I don't have 24 lipsticks but if I did it would seem like a smart idea.

I just toss everything into a clear makeup bag that I leave in the bathroom, or throw into my purse on the go. Of course, I own maybe 3 lipstick shades (and only wear one).... so I'm probably not the target audience for this post.

I'm a performer, so I have ALOT of makeup that lives in my desk drawer in the dressing room at the theater...I keep everything organized in clear plastic boxes that just happen to fit in the drawer. (and I have some weird makeup...blue, yellow and orange base, for example) At home, I am a fairly non-makeup person and keep everything in one basket with a lid that lives on top of the bathroom cabinet. I like to keep it simple.

I use a silverware organizer. Mine has 4 compartments: face, lips, eyes, and brushes. Voila. Its easy to get in and out of the drawer if I want to set it on the counter top, and my digging is minimized. The only problem is I keep tossing my mascara in with the lipstick because of the similar tube shapes.

I use a Trish McAvoy organizer. It obviously uses Trish product, but it's the most organized I've ever been with my makeup. It holds everything, and even has extra room!

I wish I could keep my makeup in a drawer, but I have a two-year-old who would find it in a snap.

I have a three drawer chest that holds the stuff I use regularly - top drawer holds foundations powders blushers concealers etc - all the base stuff - 2nd drawer holds eyeshadows, liners, mascaras, lippies etc - all the coloured stuff - 3rd drawer holds the 200 nail varnishes that I have - plus I have several pretty storage boxes for the stuff I use less regularly - including one box full of all sorts of different false eyelashes

Yes, I am a make-up junkie!!

I don't like my stuff out in sight, but don't have much drawer space. I compromised. I have a hanging, roll-up bag from Mary Kay. I leave the bag unrolled and hanging on the back of the bathroom door. Then when I have to travel its ready to roll up and go. I love them. The pouches even velcro off for quick trips.

I have a vanity in my room because I hate getting ready in the bathroom. On top are perfumes, loose powder containers and a small vase that holds brushes. In the small drawer is the rest. I'd actually love to get a drawer divider in there so I can keep the things I use regularly on one side and the things I only use to go out on the other. A silverware tray might work, but it would have to be really shallow as it's a small drawer. Thanks for the ideas. :)

I just did this on Monday. I didn't buy the fancy dividers though, I bought super-thin chocolate brown ones from WalMart (damn that redbox location) I went in assuming on white but they didn't have all the pieces I wanted in that color so I decided brown might be ok, it looks so chic now, I love it! ever since I pause and smile at that drawer when I open it.
total cost $3
I actually mentally cased other drawers in my house I could rehab.

The 3-cheek kiss here has seriously done away with my desire to wear lipstick or gloss (you just get everyone goopy), and no one seems to wear lip products here... Everything else fits in the bathroom cabinet, not that there is that much of it....

For my brushes, tools, and pencils, I use an Ikea magnetic board with accompanying magnetic cups. (the Spontan line) Keeps things accessable and off the counter. I also use Ikea organizers in drawers for pigment bottles, etc.
My lipsticks are in a 50 shot gun shell carrying case (a 12 gauge shell is almost identical in size to a lipstick) and most of my eyeshadows are MAC stored in palettes which take up very little room in a drawer. Everything else in in a traincase which is easy to open up in the morning and then stow away. If you need a good traincase, Yazmo has a great array for both small and very large professional cases at a good price.
I'm avoiding at all costs those hideous plastic drawer sets I see many people using for organizing cosmetics.

I use clear acrylic drawer organizers from The Container Store, and separate my makeup into eyes, face, lips and brushes. It works great for me, and I never have makeup on the counter.

I use two Fira boxes from Ikea. I painted the bottom of each drawer black and put non-slip liner in so the makeup stays put when I open the drawers. The Firas are great because they can match any decor. I keep eye liners, mascaras and brushes separated into little glass vases. I'm yet to work out how to store all my nail polishes.

Wow.. I guess I am super low maintenance. I have a little bag (can fit in my purse) that holds all my makeup.

foundation
concealer
blush
eye liner (2 colors)
eye shadow (2 compacts with 4 colors each)
Mascara
Lipstick (2 colors)

I have one of the see-through small ones - though it gets used for hair ties and other hair accessories. Probably need to somehow get ahold another one for make up.

I'm not a big spender just like Laurie, but my solution is a small plastic toolbox that came with a larger one purchased at Walmart for $5.00 total. It has built in trays on top with a clear plastic see through lid - the trays are just right for holding lipstick, mascara and eyeliner. I use the main compartment for foundation, powder, blush and eyeshadow. I store the toolbox under the vanity, it's small enough to fit right next to the industrial sized baby powder, bubble bath and other bathroom staples.

Oh and I use the much larger toolbox for holding my gardener's equipment:trowel, small pruners, gloves, tiebacks for vines, etc.. It's much handier to carry and I leave it on the patio during the warmer months without getting everything wet. Although I could leave it outside year round I choose to store it in the garage during winter.

Off topic but I came to a hilarious realization the other day - every single one of my in-laws thinks I wear make up daily and I rarely have it on. I guess the key is good skin - LOL - and people can't believe you have nothing to cover up.

Ok I know this was full of vanity, but I had to share.

yes, I just cant throw my favorite nail polish, blushers, lipsticks etc even though they are about to finish. I keep them as to find a new one of same kind. I have a got a good rack with drawers (glass separated) t0 arrange my things in the dressing table.
