We love Linnea's illustration of the color coordinated closet. Going from dark colors to light makes it a cinch to find what you're looking for (which proves to be quite helpful when you're in a rush). Our favorite elements of Linnea's organized closet plus more pics after the jump!
To us, hanging clothes on a hanger feels like an extra task so when it's appropriate, we fold t-shirts and jeans. If you don't have enough space in your room for a dresser, a multi-compartment hanging sweater bag works wonders. Linnea also organizes the sweater bag by color so clothes don't get misplaced. We like organizing by color because in a glance we can tell what's missing. Color grouping also makes coordinating outfits much easier because visually, you can mix and match easier.
Placing a chair in close proximity to your closet is a great idea for a couple of reasons. Your clothes will have a place to land if you can't hang them back immediately. A chair also works great for showcasing scarves or purses that you use often and don't have room for in your closet.

I'd like to see one of these in grey scale for the NYers...

I already do that (even my socks are separated as to white and colored), I always think "What would Martha (Stewart) do?" and try to make her proud.

I do separate my white socks from the colored socks, but only because I have so many socks that I need two drawers.

I don't sort by color, but I sort by putting short sleeved shirts together, long sleeved shirts together, skirts together, etc.

Looks nice but little too organized for my taste. I just have my t-shirts together, my long sleeve shirts, together, jeans together, etc. I tried to color coordinate once - it just went out the window for the most part after doing some laundry and realizing I just usually hang whatever I like best in front of the rest of the clothes.

My half of the closet is sorted by color, but my husband's half is all jumbled together. It looks kind of funny.

That's a little too OCD for me!

It has been my intention for many years to organise my closet this way, but I never seem to manage. My wardrobe is a mess and will allways be. No more illusions there. Long live wardrobe doors!

It's really handy to have things very organized, it just doesn't last too long when you get tired of the whole laundry thing and just hang things at the end of the available space...
A couple of times a year I go through everything and cull the things I don't wear any more, and put everything back in perfect order! Sorted by sleeve length, button or pullover, and color... then I can see easily what to shop for. But it doesn't last and I don't mind...

@guido - lmao!
I have mine sorted first by color, then by sleeve (or skirt/pant) length. I also organize my friends' closets the same way, after which they tell me that they "can't find anything." As if!

I agree. Thought everyone does something like this. I'm a bit of a shirt-whore with about 150 shirts. So I need actually have two systems. Dress shirts (work in an office) are colorbetic. Sport shirts arranged by time. When they come from the laundry, they get added to the right, and I dress from the left. How's that for OCD....
