Organize The Small Stuff: A Printing Tray

071608_printingtray.jpgA few months back, we braved the attic storage and unearthed a relic from the summer of '94: our old collection of rubber stamps from a crafty camp workshop (which would explain why so many of these stamps are of grasshoppers and other bugs). After donating the stamps to a nearby elementary school, we decided to keep the box: an old letterpress printing tray.

We've since left the box in the closet and pleasantly discovered a new purpose for it. Thanks to all the little nooks, this tray perfectly holds all the odds and ends that have accumulated in our wardrobe: safety pins, extra coat buttons, leftover mini spools from missing sewing kits, necklace pendants, and even a pile of pennies.

How do you organize your small stuff?

I wrote about some people who use the same type of tray/case.

I like to reuse little jars that I buy my jam in. But my favorite is the jar that Better-Than-Boullion comes in. Tricky part is getting the label off of the lid. But once washed out, the small jars are perfect for buttons, change, thumbtacks or other random bits that accumulate in my home. I also use one in my medicine cabinet (without the lid) for holding plastic razors and mini tubes of ointment.

My printers drawer is hanging on the wall with all my little stuff sitting in the spaces. For as long as I can remember my Dad has had the same kind of collection hanging in his bedroom and every time I look at mine I think about one of the best Birthday gifts I've received — those open spaces waiting for my own collection.

Using the little jars over is a great idea. They would be perfect for all the little things. I keep buttons, safety pins, bobby pins, and that sort of thing in a little container that is separated into sections and has a lid to it. I think that it was originally a desk organizer but it works great with the items I just listed. I found some good organizing and storage ideas on Scott Common Sense. They have ideas for all around the house - http://www.scottcommonsense.com/EasyOrganizing/Default.aspx
