This week, our Curees are learning about landing strips and discovering how they can make a huge impact on how well your home functions. But as well as being a filter for what comes into your home, they're also a launch pad for taking off in the morning. Start by preparing the night before...
While brushing our teeth, we walk through our home and straighten it up. Magazines are returned to the magazine rack or go into the recycling pile, things we need to take with us in the morning are placed on the landing strip, we check what's in the fridge for breakfast, clear off the dining room table and put any stray dishes in the sink, washing them and setting them out to dry overnight. Sometimes, we think about what we'll wear in the morning (though we don't always put it out), hang up the clothes we wore that day (if we haven't already put them away), give the floor a quick mop, and make sure the pile of shoes by the front door hasn't grown unmanageable. These few minutes, that might otherwise be spent staring at ourselves in the mirror, can make the difference between a chaotic morning and one that's peaceful. Try it tonight. And, if all it makes you do is brush your teeth for a few minutes longer, well, it's worth it.

Thats exactly what I do.
I found that it helps quite a bit.

The Royal We and landing strips are two things that AT needs to be cured from! But perhaps, it's just a sign that "we" spend too much time here.
As to the subject of the post - I wholeheartedly agree. Though cleaning at night is something I dread, I also appreciate it so much in the morning.

Oh No - Doing anything other than breathe and gazing at the mirror while brushing teeth with the electric toothbrush is an extremely bad idea...
...with only one hand to pick things up I dropped a water glass - and without thinking pulled the toothbrush out of my mouth while it was still running and got toothpaste/drool everywhere including the walls and my eye - which caused me to stumble onto the broken glass with my bare feet and cut my foot.
Much more trouble than it was worth - I think I'll stick to doing one thing at a time, Thanks.

Mop while brushing teeth?? I can get behind the idea of cleaning up before bed--I often do a general tidying before turning in--but that is ridiculous. Even with an electric toothbrush. Unless you have some crazy secret AT trick for mopping one-handed in 60 seconds or less...
If so, please share!

I was also wondering how you mop while brushing your teeth =)
Everything else sounds like very good advice. I also think that making sure your home is organised to start with helps a lot. Like having a decent landing strip to start with. Keeping things where you need them (not having to dig for the swiffer at the back of a closet for instance makes it so much easier to grab it and use it). Having a place to hang your clothes that you've worn but aren't going in the wash yet. I'm striving to achieve this!

If you were to substitute "while brushing my teeth" with "while filling the bath" then you'd have my night. Except the mopping part.
I imagine if I tried to do anything in addition to brushing, it would look something like the scenario described by bepsf. Not Pretty. (Hope your foot is ok!)

You must brush your teeth for 20 min...at least! Picking up a few stray things- maybe, but I have never heard of anyone mopping or washing dishes while brushing their teeth.
While I think that is a stretch to sat the least, I agree completely that starting the day with a clean space is a fantastic feeling and definitely something that I should work on.

I can almost imagine how you *might* be able to mop while brushing teeth (maybe a quick swiffer?) but I still can't figure out how to wash dishes while brushing teeth. That would definitely need 3 hands...

Washing dishes and mopping while brushing teeth? That seems unrealistic.
As for the person shocked by your 20 minute brushing, most people don't brush long enoughâfive minutes doesn't do the job, folks. Not right, anyway. I've been told a little over brushing is better than under brushing, anyway.

Here's what I do each night to keep the clutter at bay - set my timer to 7 minutes then run around the house like an insane woman with a garbage bag picking up all stray paper/etc. and dumping the bathroom garbage pail into it as well. Then I do the odds and ends - move shoes from the door, hang coats, move dishes to the dishwasher. Generally the timer goes off before I'm done, but I can then decide if I've done enough or if I want to continue. I usually continue if I'm in the middle of a chore, but never go over ten minutes. While this may not work for everyone, it definitely keeps things in order for me.

I said "landing strip" to my friend and she giggled, because she thought it was some dirty reference to shaved body parts!!

I don't actually set the timer but I also do a quick run through where I pick up, put away, straighten, wipe, stack, hang, etc. Doesn't mean I'm getting the place spic and span, but keeps it under control and nice to wake up to in the morning.
