Your Home's Flow: Observe Your Actions First

102408-flow01.jpgThis week, our Fall Curees have been working with floor plans and deciding what activities will go on in each room. Often we make these decisions without really giving them a lot of deep thought. Well, the dining room, that's for dining, duh. Not quite. In our dining room, besides sit down dinners, guests sit around nibbling on cheese and drinking wine while we cook; it's often the first place for magazines, the place where gifts get wrapped, cookies cool, crafts projects get set up and the list goes on...

If you've joined us in the cure and are using your Outbox, observe where stuff is coming from. Do you put your mail down on the couch? Maybe your landing strip needs rethinking. Eat breakfast in the living room while watching TV? Be sure there's a place to put down a cup of coffee that doesn't require a coaster. Blog in bed? Invest in a laptop instead of a desktop unit. Papers all over your dining room table? You need a better filing system. What corners of your home don't get used? Do you walk into the living room to read and then decide it's more comfortable in bed? Can you make your home presentable enough in a few minutes for someone to drop by? These are all clues to where your home works and where it doesn't. Watch yourself, without making judgements (after all, this is your home), and take notes.

This gives me food for thought.

Thanks.

We live in a converted coach house and as our kitchen/dining room/living room is the first thing you see we've had to be much tidier than we ever were before and we have no landing strip. We have another room where we do everything that's not eating and drinking and it is rarely tidy.
