Best Sources for Cheap (and Cheap-ish) Hammocks

070908_pot.jpgWe're ready for some serious laying around this summer, and nothing is better than a hammock for being lazy, ice tea and great book in hand. We've been looking around and have found some great resources for cool, cheap hammocks. Check em out:

070908_army.jpg1) Don't forget about your local army surplus store. They normally have 2-3 different options that are sturdy, have that cool utilitarian vibe, and are pretty inexpensive. This one we found on Army Surplus Store and is only $22.

070908_overstock.jpg2) Overstock has a bunch of hammocks, including the freestanding kind. But this Tequila Sunrise Double Hammock is our favorite for the colors and the price ($79).

070908_pot.jpg3) Pottery Barn's Chesapeake Hammock and Stand are now on sale for $250 for both.

070908_target.jpg4) This Home Hammock and Stand set is from Target and is $99 for the set. Target has a bunch of other options all for under $100.

070908_brazil.jpg5) Brazillian Hammocks have a good reputation for being really comfortable. This one from Hammocks.com fits 2 people, is eco friendly and goes for $39-$79 depending on the color you want.

070908_joes.jpg6) Island Joe's has some fun retro inspired fabrics for their hammocks. This one is the Beringer Chocolate Fabric Hammock and is just $69. We also like it in peacock.

Do you have a hammock, or are you planning to buy one? Any other tips you want to throw into the ring?

I had a twin oaks for years and loved it. The prices are good, and the quality and comfort of mine was great. (It actually belonged to a roomie so once we all moved out it went with him, or I would still have it today.)

I have a great hammock I bought in Mexico 10 years ago, but I live in an apartment and have never found a way to hang it inside. Any ideas?

Stylish it's not, but our first purchase when we moved into the new apartment was a hammock from King Soopers (our local variety of Kroger). Yes, it's strange to buy a hammock with the groceries, but it was cheap (under $60) and folds up, and is perfect for evenings on the patio. Saw the same one on Target's site for a little more, only drawback is that it's a four point mount, not two, so less swing, but more stability (good for the clumsy... like me.).

In mexico they screw 2 hooks into the wall (hit the studs!) to hang them indoors. Just make sure your hardware is rated for the weight of a couple of humans.

These actually are the smallest foldaway guest beds ever... but it takes some time to get used to sleeping in hammocks.

BUying a cheap hammock is a bad idea (none of these are what I'd call cheap, except for the Target one maybe). I received a discount hammock as a gift (from a big box store, and yes, it was made in CHina, shocker) and it literally disintegrated while I was in it, after a week or so. PB's hammocks are quality. I'd stay away from Chinese made hammocks.

There's nothing like the good old-fashioned canvas Gloucester Hammocks. Not cheap, mind you, but built to last a life time. It looks like Penobscot Bay is now making them & calling them "porch swings." Imagine reading a book on this hammock, lemonade at elbow and enjoying sea breezes wafting up onto the porch. Z-z-z-z-z!

I have a hammock chair for my apartment balcony - they're great if you want a hammock but don't have the space!
