We've been trying to figure out what to do with a commons area between our apartment buildings that we think has a lot of potential for al fresco entertaining. An interesting idea is to treat the outdoor section as an indoor decorative space by partitioning off the narrow section using outdoor tension rods and polyester drapery...
A 30"-52" Tension Rod costs

Wouldn't the rod sag in the middle under the weight of the drapery and without any support in the middle?
I don't have any experience with tension rods like this. Looks like a good (and inexpensive!!) idea.

We have done this before and we added a heavy duty hook (looks like a question mark) in the middle. it worked well. you can do this even cheaper by buying the fabric yourself. we went to a store that sells sailing materials and they did the rivets for free.

I love all the new products coming into the outdoor market. I will definitely look into this for myself and my clients.

You have to add something like the hook idea in the middle of the rod - also, if it gets windy, the tension rods can be a bit unstable. But with heat especially having heavy drapes can really help cut down on too much sunlight. this past week i practically had my whole house covered in outdoor drapes!

i'd like to see some pics of your outdoor drapes, pugluv, or anyone else who's been doing it! i remember a long-ago post on how the italians (?) used striped drapes over their (left-open) doors in the summertime. it was like a rustic screen door.
