Earlier today, we blogged a problem we had with our hot water pipe. It reminded us of when we first moved to LA and had to juggle starting a new job with learning a new city and trying to find a four hour block of time to wait for the gas company to show up...
We learned lately, when we had some trouble with our gas stove, that it's now possible to make an appointment for someone to show up at a precise time rather than testing your luck (and trying your employer's patience) with a four hour window (that invariably turns into a five or six hour window when you are the last stop on the technician's list). The Gas Company charges extra for this service but we think that $25 is a small price to pay for our time. Does anyone know if this is a service that's available with other utility companies? What do you do when you get the four hour window?

I almost checked that box the other day when I was transferring in my gas service to my new apartment. I was like "why is going to cost me $25 to have to sit in an empty apartment for 4 hours???" And then I realized that that was the specific time box. Definitely something new from when I moved 2 years ago!
But since I'm moving into a quaruplex (with the meters on the outside and un-gated) that already has the electric and gas on, I don't actually have to be home. :)
