Many of the projects that people have done for their January Jumpstart revolved around paint. It's such an easy and effective way to transform your decor. Lately, we've been thinking about chalkboard paint. As a child, we were always taught to not write on walls, or other objects in the home, so there's something fun about being able to make your mark on something at home and know it's actually encouraged! And we've seen it applied to on many things besides walls...
Chalkboard paint uses
We've seen it used as placemats, vases, as a coating on a table top, and we recently spied it via Cookie Magazine's blog, on napking rings!
Definitely a great and easy DIY idea, and it doubles as a placecard!
Has anyone used chalkboard paint in their home? How did it work for you? Where did you use it? Any tips when appying it?

I want to make my own 3' x 4' chalkboard, but I'll use chalkboard markers instead of chalk so the surface needs to be really smooth. I used regular chalkboard paint on a board but the paint dried slightly bumpy and it's consistent all over the surface; the marker doesn't write smoothly. Should I have used a primer? Anyone have tips to make a perfectly smooth surface?

Funny you should ask. I actually just used chalkboard paint on two side tables that I found (I heart dumpster diving). I sanded 'em down and coated the suckers with the black stuff. They turned out fantastic, if I do say so myself. The matte finish is unexpected, and really adds a modern element to the traditional, Queen Anne-style tables. I should have entered them for January Jumpstart, but alas, I wasn't organized enough...

katyied-do you write on the tables often? I have a tin of chalkboard paint just waiting to go but everytime I think I'm ready to start painting, the thought of chalkdust everywhere scares me away! Have you had problems with this or do I need to get over it!?
