Do You Have A Scary Closet?

atla-031008-FMG01.jpgOver on AT:NY, Maxwell referenced his Closet of Doom. Our ears perked up. We have one too! We call it our Scary Closet. It's the resting place for all of the stuff we don't know what to do with. Our plan's to take it from this...

although we won't have our desk in the closet, what inspires us here is the color and the calm. And we've planning on a rack like that to organize our incoming mail!

...to this. Our parents had a similar closet, so it might be hereditary. They called it the "Fibber McGee and Molly" closet after an old radio show. We understood the reference after we listened to a recording of it. Whenever the closet, a running gag on the show, was opened, a cacaphony of clattering ensued. When it ceased, Fibber McGee mournfully promised to clean it out, "One of these days." We're hoping to get to our own closet starting today as our Spring Cure 08 project. We'll post pix here for inspiration in cleaning our your own scary closet. We know you have one. What do you call it?

The deep and dreaded coat closet.

I use that exact rolling filing set up as in the pic - love it. From the Container Store.

Oh, so sad! ALL our closets are chaotic, so they don't get a fun name that would differentiate them from their neat and tidy counterparts. When we refer to "the kitchen closet," or any other, it's just understood that it's a jumbled mess. Sigh.

I just redid my closet. I sent the pictures to AT, but I guess I didn't make the cut. Anyway, all I can say is that the two days of effort were SO worth it. I no longer feel a sense of panic when I open the doors. Click on my name to read about the project on my blog.

I'm afraid there's no hope of transforming my "scary" closet like this. It's the only storage space I have in my condo. Cleaning it up to look like the "after" photo, I'd have no storage for my Christmas decoration, camping gear, out of season clothes, vacuum cleaner, suitcases, wrapping paper, etc., etc.

I was planning on cleaning out my dreaded coat closet this weekend but ran out of time. Darn. I know it will be so nice once it's done but it seems like such an investment of time to get it cleaned out, but it takes such momentum for me to dive in there! Oh wait, I can't dive in there because it's filled to the brim! :)

It's like that episode of "Friends" someone told me about where the anal retentive and style-trendy Monica has a secret room filled with ... well, with everything.

I have only one closet. It in itself isn't too scary, but there are deep, scary, hard-to-access wings about two feet deep on either side--horrible planning, and I'm still not sure what to do with them besides cram them full.

Ours growing up was called Santa Claus's closet because come fall it got all the gifts shoved in it also. (Strangely enough, we never peeked, though)

I have a Santa closet now, too that's mostly holiday stuff, but it - like the other three closets in my place - is absurdly organized with a custom closet kit and most stuff labeled and such. Weirdly, they're the favorite parts of my home. A place for everything, and ...

So glad to see that we're not the only ones hanging onto the bag from Apple that the iPhone came in!

I have only one closet, and I'm planning to clean it tonight! Springtime purges are so much fun.

Oh dear yes, I have a scary closet in our master bedroom! I am working on it as part of the cure, but there is the $0 budget in mind. :) Love the color in the inspiration photo.

We call our closet "the black hole"!

Our 'Harry Potter' closet (closet under the stairs) used to be really scary until recently. It was home to sports bags, the vacuum cleaner, fans, heaters, documents, you name it. Now it is a very well organised wine cellar. I love it except that my vacuum cleaner now has to live in the laundry room.

I hear you, Daily Nuance; my solitary closet is a bear. What to do with the extras?

OneWallKitchen: I'm in a similar situation: the "wings" that reach beyond the door frame are tough to manage. I'm thinking "wing-deep" shelves. What's your take?

My lowly bedroom closet is only 10 inches deep and 30 inches wide - I wish it were big enough to become a scary closet!

allisonlindsay: Thanks for your input--I really appreciate it! I thought about installing deep shelves, but I'd have to literally walk into the closet to reach them, and that would entail dragging a lot of stuff . The higher shelves would be a challenge, too. Wing-deep shelves would be the best way to utilize the space for sure, though. I'd have to look into getting them custom-made.

My closet is a repository for things which have no other place in some cases, but it's organized. About 1/4 of it is empty boxes (with original packing materials in them) for electronics items that may one day need to be shipped to the manufacturer. Another 1/4 is my husband's neatly stored CD collection (about 2000 discs). Another 1/4 is clothes hanging on a rod and the last bit is a stack of storage drawers with various items. It's not scary despite being a bit of a catch-all.
