When Your Fridge Breaks, Who Do You Call?

073108_fridge.jpgNevermind what to put on top of the fridge, what do you do when it stops working (besides quickly clean anything perishable out of it)? I've called most of West LA looking for a repair person and the best appointment I could get was on Tuesday. I am desperate (and hungry). Please leave suggestions, reviews, and advice for appliance repair after the jump:

I live in Venice so I'm looking for a company or person on the west side who is at least somewhat reliable with a better chance at being able to fix the fridge (it's not cooling but the lights are on!). I normally call Barrett's Appliances who we've had really good luck with in the past. It just so happens that they're really busy.

If you have any reviews of general appliance repair or places you've bought appliances, chime in. It's not a sexy topic, but it's oh so important!

Ditto - Landlord

(Who I'm about to call since the fridge seems to be filling with water lately - and it doesn't even have an icemaker or water dispenser!)

Landlord? Seriously people?

This is obviously someone who OWNS their residence.

I just had my fridge die on me a little less than two weeks ago... the very night that my newborn daughter came home from the hospital. Talk about timing.

Having had little love for my poorly laid out bottom freezer style fridge I went straight to Lowes for a new Samsung side-by-side. Having an ice maker and a water filter is revolutionary, I love it.

However, when my air conditioner died the next morning (during a heat wave, apparently my daughter has the mutant power of disrupting cooling systems of all flavors), I went for a repair rather than replacement. I hit up my neighbors for a good repair man and they came up with a wonderful guy who came right out and immediately fixed my AC.

Go for the neighbors first, get recommendations from people who have been there.

I'm no help, but the fridge pictured is sweet. Like the clock too.

Sears' Brand Central claims they can fix anything, but I don't know how fast they can get out to fix something. Until recently, all my appliances were Kenmore, because my mother thinks the sun rises & sets on Sears. They always responded within 24 hours of my service requests ... but I'm on the East Coast and not near a big city.

Max, you're learning about the powers of newborn babies! Maybe she can harness her powers in a good way ... like increasing gas mileage on old vehicles?

Seriously - Ownership is often overrated.
Besides, I called the landlord and I'm having a new black refrigerator delivered tomorrow.

I LOVE my ice maker (I used it daily even in the winter) and it broke a few months ago so you can imagine the state I was in ;-) Not much of a DIYer, I was able to fix it myself after reading this guide: http://www.selfhelpandmore.com/appliances/fix-your-icemaker-yourself.php

The problem was the valve. Thank go it works perfectly again and I have the satisfaction of knowing I did it myself.
