One catch 22 for those of us who work is that in order to take more than a weekend get-away we have to take time off work and risk falling behind. Is the vacation worth the additional stress of having to play catch up when you return? So how do you weigh the pros and cons?

Sometimes you're so burnt out you have to take a break for more than 2 days regardless of the consequences. Or maybe your job is a lot more laid back in the summertime or you have a kick ass assistant that you can rely on. Are you more likely to just risk the additional stress of playing catch up or would you rather relax at home, find some things to do locally and be refreshed come monday morning?
Think of all the employees who skipped vacations for the sake of their careers at Enron, Bear Stern, Drexel Burnham, et al. Now call your travel agent.

back when I had an office job to go to, I used to re-prioritize to make things come out even a day or so after I came back.

I'm a true believer of vacations every year and what I call 'mental days' once in awhile. I take them and I don't mind coming back to 'whatever' at work.

In general, I think most people work somewhere that's neither here nor there for them aside from the benefits of steady pay and etc. (like me), so let the shop burn down and go on vacation. Jeez, do you even need to ask?
