Method Home Bloq

Coming soon to a bathroom near you? The kind folks at Method gave us a sneak preview of their latest product line that comes out next month! The "Bloq" line of bodycare products will be available in four formats: body wash, lotion, shave cream, and bar soap. The line is naturally-derived, biodegradable, paraben-free, and has not been tested on animals. There will also be four scents that correspond to different shower characters/moods: green mint for the go getter, water flower for the pure minimalist, beach sage for the escape artist, and citron leaf for the eternal optimist. The line will launch mid-April and will be available at Target.

I don't know about anyone else out there, but I prefer my lotion and body wash to be in a pump. When applying lotion I am usually just out of the shower and trying to cover more than just my hands. To grab a container, tip it over, and set it back down repeatedly seems a wee bit of a hassle. I am really surprised that they didn't seem to consider usability in this design.

I love Method. They democratize design-as-porn; and their products are generally good... Any idea if this packaging is a partnership with a name designer (like their previous Karim Rashid dish soap dispenser)? This looks like it could be an Yves Behar design. Sort of.

Enrique, the Bloq was designed by Josh Handy, who used to work as product director for Karim Rashid, but heads up Method's product design-

A pump would have been a lot better. I like their liquid handsoaps and would be interested in trying this, but not with the awkwardly designed packaging. Maybe I'll just get the refill (I assume these are refillable) and put that into a pump bottle.

The curse of form over function strikes again! My sister used to work for a product design company and they were infuriated by the success of designers like Karim Rashid, who were often more interested in creating gorgeous objects rather than ones that work.

That being said, I've taken the bait myself more than once, and at least in terms of Karim Rashid, it's been a mixed bag. I've bought a corkscrew that simply doesn't work; a bottle opener that's OK but has cracked over use; the Dirt Devil Kone, which is very easy to dock/charge but a little awkward to hold/use; and a USB drive that works fine but has a ridiculously short cord.

The form fits well with Method's philosophy. When packaging is square more units can be packed in a box and wasted space is reduced. This in turn reduces the number of shipments that a company must make, thereby reducing gas and emissions. Square packaging = environmentally sound.

But it can be a bit annoying in the shower.

Jess,
Good answer kind of like those tomatoes that are grown to fit into the crate perfectly? Less energy and no taste!
