Reminder: Wash Your Hands!

atla07dirty_hands.gifWe've called in sick today. Throat is on fire, head feels like it's filled with packing foam, and I'm only able to move as quickly as a 95 year old Boca Raton retiree. Goodbye summer, hello cold and flu season. So here's a reminder to wash your hands regularly and thoroughly, whether at home or away, taking these steps recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

    * Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap. Use warm-hot water if it is available. * Rub hands together to make a lather and scrub all surfaces, making sure to scrub under fingernails. Avoid using anti-bacterial soaps; they've been shown to be no more effective than regular soap, and also breed super antibiotic-resistant bugs. * Continue rubbing hands for at least 20 seconds. Sing "Happy Birthday" twice or go through the alphabet slowly. Remember to do this silently in your head when out in public, lest people think you're an oversized preschool child. * Rinse hands well under running water * Dry your hands using a paper towel or air dryer. If possible, use your paper towel to turn off the faucet, and use another to open door handle to leave.

I also like to use an alcohol-based sanitizer to clean the faucet and bathroom door handles when cleaning the bathroom, and keep a small container of the stuff in both the car and in my office desk drawer.

But even with these precautions, sometimes a bug can take hold (in my case, I think it happened because of a late night out catching hot new thing, Patrick Wolf at the El Rey; must remind myself I'm 32, not 22, anymore). So today it's all about cozying up with a few books, watching HGTV/Food Network, and getting lots of rest.

You're doing the right thing. Washing hands is all well and good, but more importantly - to prevent the spread of the ick in the workplace, please, please, please stay home if you're sick! Thanks to my workaholic boss coughing and sneezing all over me, I caught the dreaded throat-on-fire plague a couple weeks back.

Feel better soon!

Good on you!

My boss refuses to stay home when he's sick so I get all of his germs. On top of that, my husband is a teacher with a super-strong immune system but he still brings the germs home. I can't win around here.

Here's to feeling better soon so you can save those sick days for "not-so-sick" days.

keep a hand sanitizing squirt bottle next to your computer at work, use 3-5 times a day. I've noticed that by doing so I've avoided catching colds that everyone else in the office caught (and I bite my nails!). Not saying its cause and effect, but I do think it helped!
