What You Can See from Bed

021408_wall.jpg

When creating a relaxing, restful bedroom it's important to consider what exactly you can see from your bed. Does it allow you to relax, to daydream? Is there clutter? Is there a painting that you hate?

In our bedroom, we've decided to have exactly nothing right ahead of us. So the wall across from the bed is blank. All the art we have is on the same wall as the headboard so that when in bed all we see are smooth light green walls. That's what works for us... For a while we also tried having the bed face the window in hopes that we would just enjoy the view but we were rarely in bed with the curtains open.

What do you see when you're in bed?

Correction: I see the brick fireplace and the gold plaster frame I hung on it. I think that makes more sense.

A pretty wallpapered wall. The television is on a side wall so that you have to make an effort to watch it.

I think that blank wall looks a little sad and it's not very inspirational to wake up to. How about either putting a nice wallpaper on it or painting it in a color that you like. Or even making it into a storage wall for magazines and putting flat magazine holders on it.

I see my patio with my mighty little olive tree striving against the wind. Beyond that I see the Santa Monica Mountains, the sky. There used to be a really tall palm tree that floated above the patio wall like a Dr. Seuss creation, but they cut it down . . .

I see my two closets, with my first two home good paintings hanging above each door...I see the ledge I put up that Im pretty sure is going to fall one day under the pressure of the two pier one vases perched on them. I should really get aroudn to securing that.

I look at the lovely green Algae wall sculpture by Bouroullec (gotta love the moma store!) against a white wall and a lovely white floor lamp. It's peaceful, pretty and is a total pleasure to be the first thing you see when you open your eyes....

pkswede--it already is painted a color that they like!

As for me, I face a large window that runs the whole width of my bedroom. Unfortunately, I rent, so it's usually covered by cheap plastic miniblinds =/

I see my window. I hate the blinds (vinyl miniblinds) but like the curtains. Anyone know (I haven't looked into this at all), are there standard-sized mini blinds in higher end finishes that would fit into the standard hardware (i.e. that I can just slip them into what my landlord put up and store the blinds somewhere else to slip back in)?

I see a pair of Modulicious One drawer units in walnut with a massive red vintage Bitossi lamp with a tall cylindrical shade off to one side along with small stacks of books and framed family photos - and on the wall above is a grouping of artwork in a wide variety of mediums and styles.

I see our large 55 gallon fish tank full of live green plants swaying in the current and bright fish going about their business. It really beats any painting or TV :) It also conveniently blocks the otherwise depressing view of the closet door.

I see... cheap plastic window blinds too. I'm on the ground floor so they are never open. And when they are open, I see window bars. Yikes. I never realized how depressing that is! It will change soon though for I'm switching bedrooms.

I have a big mirror on the wall across from the foot of the bed (and I'm not ashamed), but I don't really see it when I'm in bed - I guess I look to the side more?

I stood a big, free-standing mirror up near my window to reflect the beach & ocean. Being able to watch the waves from bed is my home dream since childhood.

A gallery-framed 8x10 portrait of my son when he was 10 weeks old. He was a cranky baby, but the photo is his very first documented smile, taken while we were lounging on our bed. I consider it the best photo I've ever shot. Seeing it reminds me of how stressful those early days of parenthood were, but how the reward is more than worth it.

I see my beautiful soft blue ("Borrowed Light") wall with two sketches of reclining female figures - I love the way the browns of the sketches work with the grey-blue background to create both visual interest and a relaxing atmosphere.

I see the side of a bookcase (looking to change that), a cool round mirror made from an antique metal mesh sifter and a great painting by Jennifer Harrison. The painting is the newest edition and it changes with the day's light - it's making me ridiculously happy.

Chinese watercolors, pale yellow drapes with soft pink roses printed on them, lovely pale yellow walls, a door that was dingy until I painted it bright white, and a bright green pouf that often has a marmalade Occasional Cat posed upon it.

I see ugly closet doors. Hmmm, gotta change that now that I've read this post! I think I'll paint them, or maybe attach some beautiful fabric to them, or hang a couple of pictures from them. The ideas are flowing in!
