Asahi Kasei’s Plus-Nyan: The Most Feline Friendly House

100908japancathouse1.jpgWe have more than a sneaking suspicion if we were left to our own devices with an unlimited bank account and a blank slate for a residential design, we'd find ourselves with many of the same interior architectural features that Asahi Kasei’s Plus-Nyan house offers its four-legged residents. And you have to check out the cat bathroom below the jump...

100908japancathouse0.jpg

100908japancathouse2.jpgThe whole house is like a cat gymnasium, but thoughtfully designed to integrate each element mostly invisibly with the rest of the homes architectural details, including tunnels (we still like this pet tunnel the best), shelving and integrated cat-proof surfaces. We especially like the integration of the kitty litter box in the same location as where their bipedal slaves do their business; our cats have a disturbing curiosity of watching us whilst upon the throne, so it would be funny to go be going together at the same time.

100908japancathouse3.jpgThe other feature we love is the corner "stairway" that mimics the human option, ascending up to the rafters and even out to a rooftop outdoor area. Our indoor-only cats would certainly love the option to parade outside for some fresh air too, so we're not going to be sharing this site with them anytime soon. But check out more of this amazing residence here yourself.

OH MY GOODNESS!! I can't EVEN believe it.. this is thee most amazing thing I have EVER seen! My only question is-- (hee hee), if they got a home improvement loan, did they tell the loan officer what it was really for?

If i were not alleric i would do this for my (thoretical) cats. As it is, the dog is just not THAT into heights. But yeah, i have design elements catering to him. potty bells that match the decor, etc.

If I only could, I would. Even if it was only to get the cardboard boxes and paper out of the living room.

Pretty incredible. Certainly not showing this to my kitty. What he doesn't know can't hurt him.

The bathroom is a bit weird, but the actual structures he build for them are really nice. Normally a "cat-friendly" home screams bright colors and get cheesy quick. This one incorporates the cat walks without taking attention from the design on the home and possible furniture in it. If you're going to go all out for your pet, this is how to do it the right way!

How many cats does this person have anyway?

There are two plans for dogs and another one for cats as well. These are part of Asahi Kasei Corp's product line of prefab earthquake resistant, fire-resistant homes. I think.

I love how well-integrated into the look of the place all the stairs and beams are, rather than screaming, cat climber! I would just love to have this stuff all over my condo, as would the kitty.

I'm sorry to bring this up, but is it sanitary to have soooo many cats walking around above cooking surfaces, etc.?

It would really suck if one of the cats got mad at you, they could jump on your head with claws outstretched. This is something my cat would enjoy when I don't let him steal my hair ties :(

That looks really cool! There's a couple in San Diego who have redesigned their house for their cats with similar items like the catwalks and stairs. Their house is all done in bright Mexican colors - very different from the cool sparseness of the Japanese design. They even published a book with lots of photos (here's a link to the amazon.com listing). And it seems that even HGTV included them in a recent show.

Me, I settle for just letting my cats jump on tables and counters, and leave the windowsills free for them to jump up top the higher furniture. They sure do like a view!

Well done. Mixes right in with other architectural elements in the space (so it doesn't look as overboard cat crazy as it seems conceptually). Much more attractive than cheap industrial grey carpeting on a stick.

this would be SO cool for a design of a cat rescue or temporary cat boarding house when owners go on vacation.

I love how the cat runs are so integrated with the design of the house. Really inspiring - simple and clean. My cats would be beside themselves!

Sweet. It's cat-friendly but still totally decorative.

And yeah, I'd draw the line at letting them perch over the counter. Besides the cat fur issue, I'm afraid Magellan would leap down from on high and carry off a chicken tender.

My cats would love that, but they do have their own bedroom set up, outdoor run and the run of the house during the day with lots of fluffy blankets to sleep on. I would want to come back as one of my cats, they have the good life.

Alright - I have been considering putting kitty ramps in but didn't really think I'd get around to it but with this push, I think a wall ledge and ramp better go in the computer room NOW and I can velcro some faux fur beds along the way for them to nap in :)
