For Pets and a Long Weekend: Toilet Water Dispenser

070208_dog.jpgIt must be one of those days, we've got toilets no the brain. But this weekend we're going away and there's just nothing our kitty likes more than fresh running water. Even if someone comes and feeds her, we can't really ask them to run the faucet for her, so when we saw this product, we thought, maybe?

This toilet water dispenser (which is only $15 by the way) is a little over the top, and we don't really have room for it, but last year a bunch of you came up with a lot of great suggestions from your own experiences with fresh water-loving pets as a part of our Drink Up Kitty Cat post:

• After doing some research, we learned that many cats prefer moving water to still and invested in a cheapo pet fountain from PetSmart. It doesn't filter and is less attractive than the one linked (imagine that) but it was also a quarter of the price. It was a great investment.

• My dog Chester has this Petmate Fresh Flow water fountain bowl and he likes it just fine: . It was inexpensive and keeps the water fresh. I take it apart and give it a good washing with soap and water once a week and it's good to go!

• Being a bit touchy about the style and function of pet products, I have resorted to using a tabletop fountain for my 2 kitties' water. I use my filtered water jug to refill. I currently have this version, which is pretty good for 2 kitties for a day: They drink from both the bowl and the top.
I have just "upgraded" to this one which will ensure plenty of water.

• I have found that the Catit Drinking fountain from Hagen works well from my two cats. One cat drinks from the bubble part and the other drinks from the bowl. Both of my cats only drinks from running water and because of the water is being run down bubble the water is always cold from the oxygen being added.

• Have anything else to add?

Pet stores sell something very similar for birds (though without the toilet design). It works very well. You could probably rig something along the same basic principle on your own.

SydneyBristow, cats love moving water, or water that refreshes itself - try a little fountain or self waterer. I bet that'll fix the toilet issue - that, and, keep the lid down!

Ewwwww.... Train your dog to drink from toilets? Is there some reason I don't think that is a good idea? Oh well. I'm sure it's just me....

I can see the pet getting used to drink out of the real toilet.

So that's why my cat is always pushing his water bowl around.

This so clever I want to buy a puppy but I worry about leaving him alone while I work. This water dispenser would relieve me of some my worry and guilt.

Simple fill your dog or cat's bowl with fresh water daily. Simple do not leave your pet alone for more than 6-7 hours, or get a sitter, get a dog walker if your dog is under 7 years old if leaving them alone that long.

The dog or cat does not think this is a toilet its marketing for the human that thinks its ok to let your pet drink from the toilet which is really wrong.

Peach2008, don't buy while homeless pets die!

Having a companion animal isn't AT ALL about "you" and your worry and guilt. Puppies cannot be "left alone" while you work. ADULT DOGS CAN - for short periods - after months of training and work, but puppies - baby puppies - need 24 hour attention and work until they are trained properly. The fact that this picture of the toilet fountain inspires you to "buy a puppy" clearly illustrates that you might not be ready for what that entails. Please be careful and considerate about such a decision.

My mum used to go on trips before she died. Well, obviously she's not going on any now. But, she say that if I didn't have the cats, I would have been able to go on these trips with her.

And now my brother suggests I could just hop on a plane and go to London for a few days, and check it out. If I didn't have the cats, that is.

But I have never gone away. It was a commitment. I knew that they would be around hopefully for many years. And while it seems sad to say things like "until death do us part"...that's pretty much how it will be.

Animals are not disposable. They are not stuffed toys that can be placed on a shelf when someone wants to do something else. When there isn't time...you have to make time.

It's pretty much the way I feel about relationships too. If you want a doll, there are plenty at the toy store.

If you want a cat that doesn't scratch or a dog that doesn't bark, you will need to choose from the selection at that toy store. because real animals and real people do have their own ways, their quirks, and they have NEEDS.

If you can't make the commitment for 24/7, forever, don't make it at all.

As far as the water, I like the Petmate too. I stopped using it for awhile, because I thought that was why one of the cats was constantly splashing the water out of the dish.

I guess he just enjoys playing in the water. Give him a little bowl, or a big bowl, and he will get every drop out of that bowl with his paws.

This is one of the few times I wish I had a yard with a pond or pool. Because I wonder if he would try to get all the water out of the pool too.

I can just see him at a small pond...

MUST. (splash) GET. (splash) ALL. (splash) WATER. (splash) OUT. (splash)

I don't know why people are putting this down. It's hilarious! And it's only ewww when they are actually drinking from an actual toilet. I think anyone that's a dog or cat lover and has a sense of humor would get it.

My cats have a Drinkwell fountain - not as funny, but it keeps their water running.
