White carpet plus dog equals...trouble. Or so we thought the other night when our friend's dog very gently tossed his cookies (and whatever else he'd gotten into while rummaging through the garbage and the garden) on the white shag carpet. Luckily for us, our hostess had a bottle of Get Serious around.
Warm it in the microwave and dab at the stain with a clean cloth. We were skeptical but we saw it in action. No stain, no smell...and that's no small feat on shag. Non-toxic and biodegrable, it's safe for use around pets and children.

Taking notes. We have 2 cats with delicate stomachs and 2 white shag rugs.

I have used this, and it is great!! While renovating I moved into a corporate apartment, which to my horror had snow white rugs. Of course, my 2 cats took this as a great opportunity to get into the habit of vomiting, repeatedly, on a nightly basis. I saw my security deposit dissappear right before my eyes... but the great people at Whiskers in NYC gave me this stuff, and it completely got rid of any trace of stain!!!

My dog vomited on two rugs within days of buying them--next time I'll be prepared!

My mom swears by Nature's Miracle for those lovely hairball/barf incidents. (In case you can't find Get Serious)

I second Nature's Miracle, it's also good for laundry and other non-pet created stains.

Nature's Miracle works the same. Trust me I potty trained a puppy. :)

How about not having pets? Problem solved.

I'd rather live with pets and deal with barf than live without them anyday. Retropian, you must not have pets or know what joy it brings.

I love that picture, by the way. Long dog snouts are the best!

Get Serious ingredients, according to the label:
Water, Surfactant, Stabilizer, Softener, Natural Citrus Scent. Only .05% phosphorous in the form of phosphates pH7.
Nature's Miracle:
water, nature's enzymes, isopropyl, alcohol, natural citrus scent."
Petastic⢠is the pre-2003 Nature's Miracle formulation (the name, not the mixture recipe, was sold).
"unique blend of proprietary enzymes, detergents and odor counteractants,"
If you're really serious, buy Sporicidin Enzymatic Cleaner. It's not cheap, but a little goes a long way, and you can use it for mold and mildew as well and on just about all surfaces.
1 gal makes 128 gallons of cleaner. It's neutral pH and is biodegradable, nonflammable and nontoxic.
It also has an proprietary formula, but it's got both a.cellulose enzyme and a proteinizing enzyme.

It turns out that (for me at least) that dogs are a great anti-depressant. It is hard to be sad when a dog needs to go for a walk, so you get at least minimal exercise, they worship you so you feel important and quite often they make silly faces at you when they get bored, which makes ya laugh.
Cats are great pets and I will always have them, but dogs are much sillier for much longer.

My chocolate lab is the best anti-depressant ever!

Great tip! I have been known to come sprinting with paper towels when my lab starts to heave, but I don't always make it in time. I hadn't yet found a great product, so I will definitely give this a shot!
I could never live without a dog. The occasional clean up job is a minuscule price to pay for the joy she brings into my life!

Nature's Miracle all the way. My cat would try to "cover up" old stains - scratching at the surrounding area - but if I used this stuff on them even her fine feline nose couldn't smell the old stain anymore.

I had white wall to wall carpeting and a very elderly cat (who died last year at 23 y/o). In the last year of her life she didn't always make it to her box. Nature's Miracle was really was miraculous. There are no stains and no residual odor.
I used gallons of it. And it worked.
My house would be tidier without pets and plants, but my life would be impoverished. It's a trade-off I'm willing to make.

I used to use Nature's Miracle, which got rid of the stain and smell, but in the long run, it would attract dirt so it would leave like a phantom stain, for lack of a better description. I read about how the name got sold and Petastic is the original formula. So I tried Petastic and don't have that problem. And I use Folex to get out the phantom stains, but these others sound really good, too.

holy moly I desperately need this stuff in Marrakech with 3 cats, a dog, and random peacocks sneaking in. Why oh why is all the good stuff in the US?

I've had success using Woolite Pet Stain & Odor remover. I've used it on carpets, rugs and upholstery, and afterward you can't tell that there was an incident.

dear god, what perfect timing. Haggis was a Buddha cat, until he got tormented by Vontz. Gilly (the dog) hates all the cats, but particularly cannot understand why Haggis, who is now annoyed at everything, has taken to peeing absolutely everywhere, including on my office chair. Nature's Miracle works great, but hasn't cured Haggis, which is another issue entirely.

Nature's Miracle hasn't worked that well for me, so I'll have to try to find some Get Serious. I scotchguarded my rugs, but that didn't help either. Why do animals barf so often? My dog always does it in the middle of the night, so by the next morning when I find it, it's already set into the rug or the bedspread.
Do I have the only dog in the world who doesn't worship it's person? Mine is more like a cat. She ignores me unless she wants something or I have food. I still love her though!

I have tried both nature's miracle and get serious, and the latter is far better. Cleans much faster. One scrub usually gets stains out, while nature's miracle takes at least 2.

It sounds obvious, but use care handling animal waste and vomit, as you would changing a baby's diaper or treating someone's scrape. I've a lot of folks just scoop it up poop with a paper towel...

Jooly -
Some animals vomit often because they're sensitive to an ingredient in their food, or even toxins from a plastic water bowl. Sometimes their stomachs don't agree with the food, or they could even be allergic a common ingredient (corn, soy) or protein source (lamb, beef, chicken). Look up holistic pet foods like Natural Balance, Merrick, and Blue Buffalo, and what ingredients to watch out for. Your dog will thank you!

Where do you get Petastic now? I used that before and lliked it, but haven't found it in a long while and don't think Nature's Miracle worked as well after buying several qts.

How about not having carpets? Problem solved!
In all seriousness, barfed on carpet gross me out, even after cleaning. I'd rather just not have a carpet, although if you have wall to wall carpet I guess you're stuck with it. Also, (this might be too much information...) I trained my dog to go in the bathroom when her stomach's upset by grabbing her and sticking her in the tub at the first sign of the heaves. Now she runs in there on her own. It's great.
