The Doggy Tempur-Pedic: Canine Coolers

080107_caninecooler.jpg One of the downsides (and upsides!) to living in LA is that it can get unbearably hot, especially if you don't live near the ocean. So imagine how our pets must feel when we try to get them to go outside (and trust me, my Siberian Husky will only go outside in this weather if there are treats, belly rubs, and ice water involved). When I heard about this product called the Canine Cooler, I was so intrigued that Herbie, my double-coated dog, had to test it out.

Getting it ready was a bit like putting together Ikea furniture (if any of you have had to put together Ikea's Expedit bookcase, you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about): it looked deceptively easy. The short story is that you inflate the bed a little bit, you add the exact amount of lukewarm water, and then you do a bit of the chicken-dance on it to create the "bed core" and drive the air out toward the valve. Then, if all goes well, you let the bed set until it's cool to the touch.

After a week of having it, and some false starts with getting the bed right, my dog is now glued to this mat, indoors and outdoors. One thing to note: Based on how this mat is built, I wouldn't recommend this for dogs who like to chew things.

Yes he is. And right now, he's hogging the AC on his cooler-bed. Talk about having the life.

What a great idea!

Oh and Grace, my Bichon goes straight for the shade and plops on the grass when he's had enough of the hot sun. Once he plops on the grass, he's done. He'll only go from shady spot to shady spot at that point.

My neighbor has a huge Chesapeake Retreiver. I'll have to suggest this to her.

Great post.

Do you figure it's strong enough to withstand a cat claw here and there?

TallulahJean, I'd say so. You can also order covers for the mat which seems like it would protect the mat more from claws.

May I also suggest the furminator? Here are the pics I took to email to a friend when they asked if it worked (I do not work for the company). That plus the tile floor and lots of water is what gets my long haired dachshunds through the summer.

The piture before this is the dog who I brushed. The picture after it is the brush that I used directly before the furminator.
