I tend to go to nearly all of the above answer choices for my flowers--to Trader Joe's for something quick and affordable, to my local florist (I love what they do at Gilly's in Silverlake) if I want a spectacular arrangement, and if I'm at the farmer's market, I'll pick something up if it catches my eye (and if I've brought enough cash...).

I live next door to the Flower Market, so that's easy -- if I remember to wake up before noon.

I go to Trader Joe's just because I go grocery shopping once a week so it's easy to get them there. But if anyone knows of a good (and affordable) florist in the NoHo/Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks area I'm taking recommendations! :)

Costco has great bunches of mixed flowers and always a good color selection of roses at affordable prices.

Wow- I never thought of Trader Joe's *smacks head.* I'm going to try them this week and see if the quality is better than the store near my bus stop (which are sort of expensive and dingy).

Tamar, the TJ's on Camelback at 20th St. has fabulous flowers, but you have to go first thing in the morning. By evening the selection looks shopworn. I haven't tried any other Trader Joe's; they may all be that good. (They tend to run very pink, though...)

I pick something up at Trader Joe's for myself, because they're so affordable. If I'm bringing flowers to a dinner party, I go to Whole Foods. Some WFs are better than others--I've had a lot of luck at the WF on San Vicente in Brentwood.

freakishly, some of the best, most fragrant roses i've ever bought were from home depot. i feel like they're only there as last minute items for people who've forgotten anniversaries or need to appease their SO for buying an expensive power tool, but the flowers are direct from the growers and cheapish. i also buy flowers online, from proflowers.com, martha stewart (i think it's affiliated with proflowers), and diamond organics. the flowers come direct from the growers, are healthier and last longer than any that i have bought locally--with proper care, they generally last for 2 weeks in the summer, sometimes 3-4 weeks in the cooler months. proflowers and martha also feature some unusual colour varieties, which can be very dramatic. they are always packed well, arrive overnight, and right to my doorstep.
