LA Good Questions: Where Do You Get Your Flowers?

040308_florist.jpgEncouraged by Abby's recent post on top 10 flower varieties, we've been picking up fresh flowers on the weekends at the Farmer's Market. But for birthdays and other special occasions, we like to up the ante and go to the pros to pick up a bouquet or an arrangement. Do you have a favorite florist in your neighborhood? Share it with us!

In the Hollywood / West Hollywood area:

Wholesale Flowers is fantastic~! (8032 Santa Monica Blvd, 90046 - close to Crescent Heights).
Pros: Great selection, good prices
Cons: Hours seem to cater more to the early riser, which I am not.

The Pavillions on Santa Monica and Robertson always has an excellent selection of flowers (where else am I gonna find a selection of Protea?) and they are open odd hours!

Home Depot has great cut flowers for cheap. I buy 3 dozen tulips for under $25 which is what a dozen costs at Bristol Farms.

Trader Joes by LAX always has a good selection of roses, thai orchids, asiatic lillies and gerber daisies. When they get seasonal flowers, like peonies, the selection is great and cheap.

For the budget conscious, Trader Joe's and Costco are great for small pre-made bouquets. LA's flower mart is great if you want to make your own (it is wholesale before 8 a.m.). Here's the LA Flower District website for more info:

I've been getting flowers at Ralphs. I can be hit or miss, but I've gotten some Tulips from there that lasted forever. Right now I've got Eucalyptus in a pretty vase, and it's actually growing and it smells great.

The best place to get fresh flowers in SLC of late has been Whole Foods. And I know they have WF (a.k.a. Wild Oats) in LA. Daffodils $5.99/bunch; Tulips $5.99/bunch; Fragrant Lillies $7.00/bunch.

One day a week they had [have?] a market at Wilshire and Mariposa (a block east of Normandie, by the giant Equitable bldg, take the Red bus) with a LOVELY flower vendor. Their booth thing was always packed with milling, fondling people.

Plus you know... food, veggies, sunglasses, etc.

I got my now sister-in-law's wedding bouquet at Gilly's (the place in the picture) and it was AMAZING. We didn't want anything traditional and they really came through. I couldn't name a single flower in the bouquet AND there was a bright orange mushroom fan thing in the back. I HIGHLY recommend them!

Whole Foods has beautiful flowers, but they tend to be pricey, so I go to the farmers' market in Plummer Park (Fountain near Gardner on the edge of WeHo) Monday mornings. A woman has a flower stand there with beautiful blooms very reasonably priced (from $4), and she loves to advise on how to care for them so they'll last. I've had bouquets from her thrive for more than a week.

whole foods!!! they have a flower arranger on site so you get to pick which flowers you want and they arrange it into a beautiful bouquet- replete with brown paper packaging wrapped up with string. :)

if you stick to seasonal flowers, you won't break the bank. i recently created a HUGE bouquet of rununculas, with 4 different colors, and it came out to only $28.

Personally, (sorry to kill the buzz) I cannot shop at Gilly's any longer... the (I presume owner) is always rude and the flowers are overpriced (I paid $30 for 6 stems last week - they're pretty just not $30 pretty) If you want really unusual flowers and really unusual prices try the LA Downtown flower market. I bought some very beautiful flowers (I'd never seen them before in my life could not name them) It was a full bouquet (at least 10 stems) , they cost $6 and they lasted three weeks. (No joke)
