Succulent

I will be the first to admit that I don't always have the best of luck with plants, but one kind of plant that somehow "still loves me anyway", are succulents. Besides the the fact they are easy to maintain (ie. don't need much water), they are also beautiful, have amazing colors, sculputural, thrive in our climate, and are a perfect compliment to more modern decor. So, this morning, my attention was immediately caught via Daily Candy's mention of a new store called Succulent.

Succulent is a "flora design firm" that delivers gorgeous potted arrangements. Their mission is to provide a "modern, green-sustainable alternative to floral design by using a variety of succulent plants, in soil, to replace the average cut flower arrangement." Conceived by actress Samantha Mathis and designer Ryann Davis, they use locally grown succulent plants and oraganic soil. The arrangements are all packed in mirrored boxes or modern ceramics. Their paper products are 100% cotton, and they offset their delivery emissions and overall carbon footprint by donating to Carbonfund.org. They also contribute 5% of proceeds to the Green Coast Foundation. Contact Succulent via their website or by phone (310.279.9985) or fax (323.851.8058).

Wow...are you guys psychic? Succulents are excellents! They've been on my minds since I read a great article on them (the plants not the store posted) in last month's Domino. I even scanned in a plant from the article that I plan to hunt down in June.

On another note...before running a 5K in La Jolla last week, I noticed a patch of red succulents by the road and picked a sample to grow on my own.

My friends buy them all the time in Orange County at the Golden West Community College Swap Meet.

No need to buy succulents, just take clippings from your friends. They'll root in most soils and grow quickly. Make sure to water frequently while they're starting out and keep them a bit shady during the summer.
Btw, if you have succulent-less friends, try the large LA gardens, a little pirate pruning won't hurt the plants.
