Playful Holiday Tablescape Using Chalk

In the past, we've dined with family members who brought their little ones along--we constantly found ourselves entertaining the tykes with some mealtime coloring. We've decided that crayons and chalk at the dinner table aren't just for children. Kelly has the same idea, using chalk tablecloth during holiday gatherings.

We'll definitely be stealing this idea for future get-togethers. The chalk tablecloth is a great organizing tool for showing little helpers where casserole dishes should land. Using chalk also lets guests know where they should sit by writing everyone's name next to their place setting. It's also a fun treat when everyone sits down to find chalk sticks (for their own use) tied with twine. Once the table is cleared, a game of hangman or tic-tac-toe is fun for everyone (and a great way to maximize space in a smaller home).

Nice if there are children at the table. A few years ago I had Sunday lunch in a restaurant in Paris the table cloths were white paper an any children there were give pencils to draw with. I agree chalk on black clothes not good.

You can get the chalk out though which is nice. Very similar, but, i have used white paper to cover my table before and asked a child guess to decorate the table for dinner to keep them entertained before we eat. Can't set the table ahead of time - Worth it!

Great Idea for lots of different situations....in Portland Oregon one of my favorite restaurants had covered each table with white paper tablecloths and crayolas. Their walls are covered with stunning framed artwork left on the tables by patrons drawing during dinner, drinks and/or coffee and great music (and popular restaurant for adults having a date night)

At my child-friendly wedding reception I covered three large tables with butcher paper tablecloths (which luckily matched the white silk on the other tables)...there were a lot of children in attendance and many happy children and parents.....
