There seems to be a trend towards more of an antique-style with cabriole legs, carving, and curves in furniture at the mass-market furniture stores (e.g. Crate & Barrel). It's refreshing.

I wonder what the legs & sculpted apron are made of - metal or plastic?

Does this make anyone else nervous, knowing it's Ikea? After my first apartment, I vowed never to buy anything from Ikea with moving parts again. Everything and I mean everything fell apart....their higher end desk collection, lamps, even curtains.
It's so tempting for the price and style. But I wonder if it's a deal with the devil (drama, I know) :-)

I love the side table, and would love it more as a nightstand. If only I could figure out how to hack a drawer...

Anokha, I bought the little nightstand with the blue and white tiled top from IKEA a few years ago, which I love (and is easily the sturdiest and the best IKEA piece I have ever purchased).
To fit a drawer, I picked up baskets in the store that I thought might fit and tried all of them on the floor model. I ended up with a $5 basket that works great as a drawer and fits nicely with the natural stain of the nightstand.

I don't know how I would hack a drawer, other than that, though.

To install a drawer, measure the opening (LxWxD) then go to HomeDepot/Lowe's. Ask for drawer slides and a drawer. They will custom build the drawer for you, using whatever facing you like. I prefer the full extension slides, so that all the drawer is open, not just the first two-thirds. Ask for (a) knob hole(s) to be drilled for you.

A basket is considerably less expensive.

I love credenza/sideboard's shilloette. So awesome! Definatly some wallpaper on the front of it would look sweeeeet.

I installed an IKEA PAX wardrobe system with numerous drawers, pants racks and doors in my bedroom a few years ago - have never had a problem.

Also have a Docent entertainment wall-unit and Kaffatorp cocktail table (both discontinued)
Again, never any problems.

amandadom: dont have problems with IKEA furniture falling apart. The sturdiest piece of furniture I have from IKEA is the wooden step stool from IKEA.

I saw this yesterday on the site. I sooo love it. I want the sideboard as a dresser in my bedroom. 98% of my furniture is Ikea so I guess it doesn't make me nervous.

I love that credenza and want it as a bedroom dresser. Has anyone seen this "in person"? I'm wondering if the three sections are the same size so that those drawers could be installed in the center section.

I'm not sure how you'd make a drawer for the night table, but a pull down (or up) door should be easy enough. A piece of 3/8" MDF, cut to size and mounted with a piano hinge and a magnetic catch should do the trick.

As to Ikea durability, I have a 10 year-old Karlanda sofabed and chair that are still in great shape. I replaced the foam in the seat cushions last year and have made/bought different slipcovers over the years, but the pieces are still very solid and stylish and were a great investment.

I love the lines of the sideboard and cabinet- I hope IKEA makes it available in white...

Folks need to learn that you get what you pay for at Ikea (and most other stores for that matter). I have had really good furniture from Ikea when I bought the better stuff. I just had to sell my Karlanda sofa (moved, didn't have room) and at six years old, it looked new enough that I got nearly half of the $1200 I paid for it.

I love the cabinet, but have no place to put it...

To fancy for my taste. But I still love Ikea. I've never had a problem with any of their products yet.

Ikea furniture has a purpose as disposable, inexpensive, "starter" furniture. It will not, however, survive a move.

I've never had a problem with IKEA furniture. It's nice to see them embrace other styles in the store. I love the look of this furniture, and I'm sure it's much more affordable than Brocade Home. Hopefully they will come out with more colors to choose from.

Re: the disposability of IKEA furniture: My one friend always had problems with IKEA b/c he always rushed to put things together and always had extra pieces at the end...so of course it would fall apart eventually. If you take the time to put it together properly, you can avoid problems of it falling apart later.

I have a few Ikea pieces that have survived several moves just fine. My TV cart is 17 years old and still going strong.

I don't like this scallopy style or the yellow color. I prefer simpler design.

You definitely get what you pay for at IKEA. I have a sofabed and chair from a line that is now discontinued that have made three moves with me and the only thing I've ever replaced on them were the slipcovers--and that was a design choice rather than a need.

These days I regard IKEA basics as a starting point--having fallen in with the hacking crowd. My first thought upon seeing the nightstand was "foot stool". Instead of assembling the top entirely, attach a thick piece of foam to the bottom, upholster with some Marimekko or other similar styled fabric, and voila!

bluelittlegirl: Funny, that's something along the lines of what I was thinking! Perhaps with lacquer boxes? My fear is that it might look sloppy, but I think I'll go to Ikea in person and experiment.

m_j_s: Interesting... I didn't realize that Home Depot could do that for you! My only concern is how do you get the front of the drawer to match the table? Do you just buy an extra drawer, and ask them to cut down the parts? (Also: Any idea as to how much it would cost?)

doesn't anyone have an original idea anymore????? i agree that this is definitely iconic brocade home--if i were them, i would address this! come on ikea--can't u come up with something interesting without copying something already out there??

brocade didn't come up with the style originally either. We've had this argument before.

Ikea furniture lasts as long as its construction. If every assembly is in part a quality hack, plus the materials are legit (particle board is never good), it will last as long as any other furniture or piece.

I love my cast iron candle holders, for example.

That side table looks like the nightstands that I made for my bedroom, minus the legs. Not too difficult considering its a box, I just gave it a back and attached it directly to the wall.

I bought the credenza in black and I love it! The door can be adjusted so that they sit nice and straight, and the drawer slides are good quality. You cannot interchange the location of doors/drawers easily though, but that was ok for me. I thought about wallpapering the drawers, but decided against it, and still love it.
It is the only full IKEA piece I have in my studio (curtain rods too) and I vowed not to buy IKEA, but couldnt resist. At 160 pounds it is lots of metal (incl. the legs and base trim) and very sturdy, so I hope it lasts!

Don't try to paint it though...I tried to paint some IKEA shelves once, and even with sanding them first the paint just peeled right off their factory finish. Don't try it.
