Amy, an AT Los Angeles reader, dropped by scenic Santa Barbara recently and snapped us a few photos of her new favourite vintage housewares and clothing store located on popular State Street to share with everyone. We remember dropping by awhile back ago and remembering the store to be a time warp mix of nostalgia and a focus on the 40's and 50's (the elevator dressing rooms are dandy!). And check out the amusing "The Road to Santa Barbara" video Retroville created to woo visitors northward below the jump...

ooooooooooo.... i like it..........

I hope those aren't the infamous radioactive red fiesta ware! Uranium food = bad.

I LOVE Fiestaware. Beautiful colours!
And Misscascadia, the uranium one (Brilliant Red) really isn't that radioactive. It's only risky if you have foods with a high acid content, like citrusy stuff or things with a lot of vinegar - it can leach uranium salts out, then, which can accumulate in the body. The radiation it expels seriously isn't that dangerous - it's fairly weak beta radiation, and you'd have to, say, sit on it for a few days to do any damage. (Even holding it wouldn't be bad, your hands are quite insensitive to radiation - and again, it's only beta radiation, which only travels about a metre. There's just about no gamma activity, and the alpha radiation won't even go through skin.) I'd be more concerned about its lead content!
Of course, being a chemistry nut, I really really want one XD
There's some information here on it.

It's a retro McSplosion! Can I just move in? Or at least have that fridge and stove to call my own?
