Frank's Sock-it-to-me Sunshine
Room for Color - West #27

thumbs up

Name: Frank
Location: Reseda, California
Type of Home: single family home

Color Inspiration: I'm living with my Daughter and son-in-law and we wanted to freshen up the living room with colors that would lend a nod to the early 60's flavor of her home and bring contemporary sophistication. I work for an interior designer who suggested we knock out the wall between the kitchen and living area and do a soffit at a crazy angles and emphasize these new angles with color to surprise and delight my young grandchildren. The colors were inspired by a simple gray and yellow pillow my daughter found.

Give Frank a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

Sock-it-to-me Sunshine

Colors Used: We used Dunn Edwards Ripe Pineapple for the yellow accent walls. The base color is Dunn Edward Silverlake, and the richer gray color-block walls are Dunn Edwards Adirondack. We used Dunn Edwards Lazy Lizard as our poison green accent on a retro side table.

Color Tip: It's important to let go of any fear of going bold and find colors that excite you. Use a small item that you absolutely love and build a room around it's colors. A vase, a painting or a pillow! Any inspiring item will do. Remember that when colors go on large walls they appear darker than the small swatch you have chosen. I always step my color choices back one or two steps to achieve my original color choice when painting a room.

Depressingly barren and uninviting, despite the splash of yellow. I'm imagining voices echoing off the walls.

when I have a place I can paint, I am definitely stealing this paint idea to create the illusion of architectural interest in my boring, boxy future house. brilliant.

The furnishings don't do much for me but I do like the color scheme and how you used it, so I gave it a thumbs up.

"Ripe Pineapple" is a great name for that yellow.

With two small children and a dog, I imagine you want to stay as clean and sleek as possible! I think think this is elegant and cool. And clean!

I like the airiness and colors used, but I agree that this place looks unfinished and too new, like they'd just moved in. Some art on the walls, curtains and lamps (I only see overhead lighting, which probably makes things look even more barren at night) and a few personal items (framed pictures, a collection, etc.) would do wonders to make the space feel warmer. Also, the rug under the dining table is way too small and the set seems too small given how many people live there.

very incomplete. would be interesting to see it again once you've finished decorating and furnishing it. I find the contrast in the colours to be too subtle for the hard lines and angles you've created.

Why no things on the walls? Art? Family photos? Seems incomplete...

Yes, the room WAS unfinished in these photos! To clarify the sparseness of the room, let me add that Frank took these pictures just after the walls were finished. The cool 'vintage meets modern' furnishings have now come in, and the room has become very warm and inviting . He was anxious to enter the room in the competition and rushed to post his entry on the last day of eligibility. Hopefully the colors of the room will speak for themselves in this "color contest".........BTW, Frank works in my Interior design studio and I'm delighted to see the fresh and inventive color choices he made for his daughters living room.......and that he took my advice!

I figured this was just after painting. THe grey in 3rd pic is genius. Agree with THeo though that the color contrasts could be starker for this sharp angles - then again, maybe I shouldn't speak until we see the 'moved in' version.

Also, go kids on that couch! Who is the room for anyways?

This makes me feel like I'm in Norway. I need to buy a sleeping mask because it is just too stark.

Total lack of colour for this contest...a rug and 2 tables...starkness but not colour...

I agree that there's not really enough color for the contest, but the painting pattern is so fantastic! I love the color combination and the geometry does really cool things to the room.

I think that some people are not getting the jist of the contest. The focus is on the color, not the decorating of the room. It just so happens that most contestants have finished furnishing their rooms. It's clear that this paint job is new. Love it! Can't wait to see what you add as far as furniture to finish off the space, though the kids are loving the space as is!
