Katarzyna's American Autumn Inspiration
Room for Color - International #5

thumbs up

Name: Katarzyna
Location: Poznan, Poland
Type of Home: bachelor flat
Color Inspiration: I was inspired by my visit to the United States in the fall. I loved the vibrant colors of nature and the Halloween spirit. Mostly because this holiday in Poland, where I live, is considered dark, sad and reflective. To sum up - I'd say my inspiration was the pumpkin pie

Give Katarzyna a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

Pumpkin Fall

Colors Used: Wall paint - orange DULUX from a mixing machine

Color Tip: Stick to one basic color and gradually complete it with few supplementary ones. If you want to add a contrast make sure it derives only from one counterpoint.

This looks great with the dark cabinets, really warm and inviting but the white countertops keep it looking crisp and fresh too. And I especially love that strip of vintage advertisements - is it a wallpaper border? It really adds (or even "ads") character.

What a delightful kitchen! Unexpected brilliant wall color. Tempered with the sleek, dark cabinets and white countertops and refrigerator. I dig the positive/negative effect of the range top's dark against the white counter top, and the oven's white face against the dark cabinets.

LOVE the retro wallpaper border, that adds FUN to the kitchen. Reminds me of coffee at diners and fountain drinks in the afternoon (as shown in movies, LOL), Sunday afternoon movies or drive-ins. And I like the striped blind and towels.

Very nice, very happy place to be!

I love it. Very updated-retro......my mom's kitchen was the same color in the late 70's.

Katarzyna has made it modern, love it.

The Americana wallpaper border wouldn't work in a U.S. kitchen, but somehow it takes on a different meaning when transported to Poland. And those colors look great!

@MansardRoof: I'd gladly give it a shot in my kitchen, as I'm near the usually dreary coast in California. I just haven't quite figured out how to sneak all new cabinets into my rental yet, and disguise the sound of the installation.

I suppose I could tell neighbors and the apartment manager that I'm building an ark in here. After all, that's what it sounds like occurs in other apartments. ;)

The biggest problem would be being over-stimulated from the intense happy color. Oh, and the cravings for hot dogs, all the time. I love hot dogs.

P.S. Did everyone notice the old-time child photos updated with coordinating print frames, shown in the center photo?

If Katarzyna can tell us, were those custom made? The frames? Or store bought? They go so well with everything else.

Oops...I also want to know about the faces on the fridge. I call them "yam heads", because they are the color of yams (I love yams too).

#9: I don't know, that wallpaper border reminds me of Wendy's Hamburger decor, but maybe you could make it work! Good luck with that top-secret kitchen reno of yours!

Thank you all for the great comments!

@ #9: The old-time photos of my mother's cousin are framed with frames that I spotted in a furniture store. They were dog cheap and fitted in so well that they look like custom made. You can't see that very well in the picture but on the first photo the little boy has a rocking horse and on the second - a fiddle - sooo cute!

Pictures hanging on the wall are genuine american ads (JELL-O and Maple Syroup) from old newspapers dating from early 20th century - there even are some newspaper stories on the back side of them.

The "yam heads" I found at the american garage sale. Sooo cool! I was so happy to accidentally come across it when I was in U.S.! And they actualy are Haloween pumpkins with mean faces :)
