022609_roomservice.jpgDuring a recent search for a modern dining table Abby reminded us about Room Service, a great source for modern furniture with a relaxed swanky Palm Springs vibe (where they coincidentally have another showroom). The showroom on 3rd carries all manner of mid century modern inspired sofas, armchairs, shelving and accessories at better prices than we've been able to find anywhere else. The staff is incredibly helpful and can put together a custom order if you don't see exactly what you're looking for. Plus a huge bonus is that not only is everything made in the US, it's made right in downtown LA.

022609_orangeshelf.jpgOwners John and Taryn Bernard design most of the furniture themselves, drawing inspiration from Hollywood Regency, Mid Century Modern and clean lined European design. They also carry tons of great accessories from the likes of Jonathan Adler, Angela Adams and Thomas Paul. The showroom itself is inspiring but if you need more help they have in-house designers to help you with layout and style and can customize most of the furniture on the floor.

Also check out the vacation homes they've decked out in Palm Springs (all available for rent)!

They also have a great selection affordably-priced gift items for 20-something hipsters (a step or two above Urban Outfitters, several steps below OK, Fitzu Society, Zipper).

The usual suspects are in attendance, but yes, the staff is cool and the prices are fair. Plus, mid-century and hipster goods in the town that time forgot? What could be more perfect?

Their quality isn't the greatest. There are better repro's at the same prices out there. From what I've seen and heard, you're better off with Inmod.

I love Room Service. My boyfriend and I searched high and low for a large modern sectional and couldn't find anything we liked that was still affordable. We decided on the "A" sectional, a 9ft by 8ft secctional in chocolate brown, commercial grade fabric. We've had it for over six months and we love it. Particularly surprising is how comfortable it is, I've been known to sleep on it from time to time when I fall asleep in front of the tv.

I bought a great magazine rack at Room Service that was a full $15 cheaper than the same exact magazine rack at Zipper across the street. What more can you ask for?

Alec--I can't believe that you featured the pic of the long, pink sofa! I actually looked at the floor model of that piece on their sales floor about a year and a half ago. It was priced ridiculously low to sell because it had just come back from the after-party/premiere for the "Legally Blonde" sequel.

looking for something similar to DWR Bantam sofa. within, or preferably below 1500 price tag. Any suggestions? Reviews of Bantam would be cool too. thanks

in my opinion, and the opinion of about 4 of my friends who have had similar experiences, they should change their name to "poor service". i ordered two custom pieces from room service, and both arrived damaged. BOTH of them had to be re-made. they over-promise, there was terrible communication, and the quality is just 'okay.' this was about 5 years ago, so hopefully things have changed.
that being said, i really love both of the items, at least in terms of looks. it was just torture getting them made correctly. i would not go that route again.

Not my style...and why do so many stores in LA carry the same style stuff?

Not really my thing. Overall, the looks are a bit gimmicky and not particularly well edited. I get the impression that they are trying to be anything they think you want them to be. All current trends are represented, some rather garishly, but no particular voice or vision comes through. Prices are comparable to West Elm, give or take.
