A guitar stand placed strategically next to a tall lamp makes for an unexpected and lovely vignette. We also like to see a single guitar hanging on the bedroom wall. The instrument will tend to pull focus and make the spot stand out. Our personal favorite is the guitar stand at the end of a long hallway. The black case pops out from the white wall making for a classic silhouette. The organizer in us loves to see guitars hung in a line which doubles as storage and display. A non-working fireplace is the perfect nook for a miniature piano while adding a bit of whimsy to the space. Additionally, framed music posters always add pattern and color to a room with their unique design.

I think it's weird to treat musical instruments as decorative objects, but then I thought painting the piano was a shame. Maybe most of these aren't really owned by real musicians?

Oh not in Nevada, if it's from somewhere humid enough the bridge can actually pull off completely. Keep it in its case and humidified!

Yes, humidity is a killer. It can also gunk up the coating on some strings. Our friend has a display like this and complains about the grime on his guitar all the time but he loves the look, so just pays for new strings.

I've always wanted my boyfriend to bring home a guitar that doesn't get much use at his studio so I can put it on our wall... He'll never do it though. You'd never even know a musician lived here.

is it just me, or is there no musical instrument in #7?
my boyfriend and i built a rack similar to #4, but i think they used pvc pipe? and we used a poplar board. i love it, it was super simple and crazy cheap to build. check it:

I make my living playing the saxophone and flute, so I have purrhaps different feelings on the subject. I guess from a purely design standpoint, some musical instruments can add to a look of part of a room. However, instrument are more than just tools. Each instrument actually sounds different because it was played uniquely by someone. McCoy Tyner hated to follow Thelonious Monk at a club or concert hall because the piano sounded dead and kinda sour and needed re-tuning. That said, using such a personal extension of yourself as decoration is icky to me. Besides, an un-played instrument is lonely and sad, like a girl at the dance who never gets asked.

My husband is a guitarist and we house 6 frequently used guitars at our home. Instead of artwork over our bed, we have 4 guitars hanging from the wall on one side, wrapping around a corner onto the side wall, and 2 hanging on the other side. Totally functional, and looks pretty cool.
