Jewelry boxes are the obvious choice. These, from West Elm are a favorite of ours.

If you've got a lot of jewelry, whether of the real or costume kind, consider this chest, which is actually made to hold tools. For a more traditional jewelry box, we like the bright green one which opens this post. It includes a travel case.

Crafty? Amazon sells a pattern for making this one using the wood of your choice.

While we were in NY, we purchased this ceramic glove mold from Fishs Eddy, which now sits on the dresser in our home. While it's not available on the website, you can call them and they will be happy to help you out. We use it drape our necklaces.

Our friend made this great jewelry tree for us using a silver-plated mint julep cup, cement and a branch she got from a friend at the flower mart. It's perfect for holding earrings. Follow her lead and make one yourself or you can purchase similar at Urban Outfitters.

Grace blogged these Nigella Lawson bowls to hold jewelry. A pretty set of otherwise unused tea cups, old fashioned wide champagne glasses or mousse cups could perform the same function. Of course, you can put them away in a drawer but they'd also be pretty left out on your dresser or bathroom counter.

Finally, if you prefer to hang your jewelry, the loops on Ikea's Mandal Mirror beg to be hung with necklaces, hoop earrings and bracelets. We'd thread a ribbon through the loops to dress it up and provide a place for our stud earrings to rest.
I use one of these hanging vinyl pocket things:

It's ugly, but who cares, it's in the closet. For the first time in my life, I can find all my jewelry, with ease! I totally love it. And I can't believe it's still not full.

If you've REALLY got a serious jewelry collection, get Bisley multi-drawers. You can buy plastic inserts in lots of sizes - the smallest one is perfect for rings and earrings. I have a large collection of antique tribal jewelry, with a lot of bulky pieces, and that was the perfect solution. http://www.bisleyusa.com/multidrawer.htm

I use a box that it intended to store nails/screws/bolts, etc. It closes securely, and it works perfectly.

when i was in high school, i used old staffordshire teacups to hold my costume jewelry... all five pieces of it, haha. now that i have more jewelry and less space, i use a tool box and cotton balls to protect the rhinestones. not glamorous but practical :)

This little beauty from QVC (yes, that QVC) hold an unbelievable quantity in organized splendor.

The best part is that you see all of your jewelry at one time without rummaging thru or remembering which drawers.
And it costs less than $150. The picture shows it on it's legs, but in our small spaces it works best attached to the wall. Search qvc.com for "jewelry armoire."

wow, I'm a bit more ghetto, er-rustic, and use a splatter screen from the $1 store to store my earrings. It was a great idea from instructables or craftzine. Although I'm tempted to glam it up a bit with ribbon and fabric.

I guess I am more neurotic than most, but I stopped using a jewelry box because I thought it was just too easy for the casual thief. My really expensive jewelry stays in the safe deposit box, but the rest has sentimental value. My husband's fraternity pin, my father's school "key", my mother's Haddassah pin. The hanging vinyl sounds great. I could even feed my neurosis and put it inside a coat. Are there many robberies where I live? Almost none. I live in a small town where many people don't even lock their doors.

it holds EVERYTHING

I have the QVC one as well, and I looooove it. It's sturdy, attractive, keeps everything hidden but well-organized and holds 27 years worth of jewelry with room for more. It's also good for impressing guests (mainly the girls ... boys tend to say something along the lines of "I would never have guessed you have that much jewelry").

I have so many earrings (mostly studs too) that a normal jewelry box would never work. I have some pretty divided boxes ($1 each at Target) inside two drawers of an Ikea 5 drawer Helmer file cabinet to sort all the earrings. The necklaces hang off hooks attached the side. I like the branch idea for necklaces - worth a DIY try.

I have this jewelry box from JcPenney of all places. It's similar to the one Ana posted above:
http://tinyurl.com/5eo7uk -- it comes in Cherry and Espresso.
Additionally, I hang most of my necklaces on a row of screw eye hooks that are attached to the end of my dresser. They face the wall and are completely hidden from view :)
I had a nice open wood tray, but unless you have only 5 pieces of jewelry, it gets cluttered in no time. Also, cleaning the dust out of it with a lot of jewelry was a pain.

I use the tool chest shown, and I put foam in the drawers so I can pin all the stuff down, otherwise it slides.
But I am in love with that green one!

I bought an acrylic hand towel stand from Marshall's. It has four "spokes" sticking out. Works great for hanging necklaces, and looks good too!

Cool site Jeri. Especially for those with relatively small collections.
Although, as with a lot of the posts in this thread, I do worry about storing costume jewelry out in the air, dust, and humidity. But, maybe that's only a problem in Florida.

My mom has the qvc thing. That's too much jewelry, folks, if you're buying a minor piece of furniture for it. She was really proud of it, but I was kind of appalled.

I'm embarrassed to say, but I have 2 of those old caboodles boxes that I had gotten back in the late 80s early 90s. I keep them in the closet away from view.

LauraE, I get what you're saying. I don't know why, but I've always had it drilled into me that my jewelry should be hidden away. My most precious pieces are in a safe at my parent's house and the rest in hidden in an unassuming jewelry bag tucked away. It's not alot of fun, my jewelry gets tangled, it's not easy access and half the time, the pieces I wear just end up on the bathroom vanity. I'm thinking it's time to get over my fear and get that jewelry box I've always wanted.

I recently bought a "tree branch" from Urban Outfitters for my necklaces... but eveything is getting tarnished and sad.
I'm looking for a bigger box now.

I use a round chinese lacquer box (orange with cool designs) that I bought many moons ago. Looks good on the vanity and adds a pop of color.

I like the fitted, velveteen-lined trays that go in drawers. I got them at the Container Store and need more. Fine and heirloom stuff is in a small Talbots case that I could (theoretically) grab if I needed to get out in an emergency.

I have a vintage jewelry box that's pretty similar to the green one above. Do an Ebay search for "Buxton" and you'll find some gems.
