Roundup: 4 Inspiring Ways to Decorate A Hallway

040109hall-04.jpgWe're always fascinated with folks ability to decorate a hallway. Our small passage way to the bathroom and bedroom stands almost bare. Because we have new projects on the horizon we are considering giving our hallway a much needed make-over. Four inspirational ideas after the jump...

We love this hallway. Not only is the graphic design hand-painted (holy moly) but we like how the graphic design is broken up by the wainscoting. Because the graphic design is bold, our eyes need something soothing to balance the look.

Hallways are typically pretty darn narrow but Cathinca manages to add a couple tall storage units to house her belongings. The important thing to note here is that the storage pieces utilize vertical space, which makes the hallway still flow visually (and not look cluttered). Cathinca also goes the extra step and hangs a single curtain panel to make the space visually interesting.

Use the hallway for seating and shoe storage. This is great for a hallway that gets natural light--simply store purses, shoes and other items that would go on a landing strip.

Using mirrors is great for small spaces because they reflect light, open up the space and act as windows--perfect for the narrow hallway. We especially love keeping them all one color so as not to seem jarring.

This is a sort of clueless question... What type of carpet is that in the top photo? Is it cut pile, or loops, or woven? It looks sort of like natural fiber but maybe it's just standard industrial carpet. I'd love to replace the icky stuff in my bedroom (among other things, it's stained with mouse droppings! super gross!) with something with low pile.

I'd like to know what the carpet is, too! I'm looking for something with just that look for our basement.

looks to me like it might be seagrass, sisal, jute, etc.

It looks like some kind of a natural fibered tight loop. I've seen this before.... can't remember where! It's like the loop on berber, I think.

Does anyone know of a source? We want a 3'x24' natural-material runner for our humongous hallway, and maybe binding the edges of carpeting would be an affordable way to do it.

I like the skinny bench in #3.

Does anyone have any ideas on where one can find a bench that narrow?

That plant looks a bit sad... think it needs to be rotated out to a sunnier space.

But great post. We've got a narrow hall in our apt... I have a series of goofy photos of our cats going down it. It's a fun place to do something a little different, like the holy-moly paint job. You don't have to look at it all the time, but it's striking in transition.

holy-moly is dead on...for the hand-painted graphics that is.
