Roundup: Best Hand Soap To Impress Guests

050109_soaps.jpgPerhaps it's a case of the grass always being greener, but it seems that whenever we go over to a friend's house and use the bathroom, their hand soap smells better than ours. Maybe theirs is more expensive or perhaps they just stumbled on the best Method scent or it's just nice to smell something different, but we tend to appreciate this little detail more at others' homes than in our own. Does this happen to you?

Here are just some of the soaps that we've coveted while at a friend's house. We've since bought a bunch of these over the years, and as we mentioned, if the bottle it came in isn't great, we refill our Savon de Marseille bottle: it's glass, it's minimal and we like it.

Siapua Bar Soap comes in beautiful packaging and sublime smells, $8.
Savon de Marseille Liquid Soap in a glass bottle. Runs around $20 for the bottle but it lasts forever and comes in amazing scents like Fig and Verbena.
Whole Foods Linden Bar Soap smells amazing, leaves hands soft, $8.
Method Hand Soap in Green Tea and Aloe is the cleanest smell ever, but we can't always find this illusive scent at Target, so when we do, we stock up. It's eco friendly and it's cheap, $4.99
Claus Porto Liquid Hand Soap
French Olive Oil Soap is classic, comes in great scents and lasts a long time. It's all natural and it doesn't dry out your hands. We love how blocky and earthy it is, $12.
Trader Joe's Orange Blossom and Honey hand soap is a smell right out of the south of france. It's refreshing, it's sweet, and it's completely affordable and convenient to get.

Are there small details that you've noticed in other people's houses that have inspired you to do things a little differently in your own home?

I have bottles of the Method cucumber-scented hand soap in my bathroom and kitchen. Both rooms have light green walls, so it matches and it smells good. Plus, you can buy the refill package instead of buying more bottles.

I think you mean that the Method soap is "elusive," not "illusive."

What about suggestions for larger sizes???
like *bulk size* for refilling a single reuseable bottle rather than buying individual liquid handsoap bottles over & over again which are *terribly* wasteful!!

Outlikealamb, Method sells bulk refill packages of its hand soaps, so you don't have to keep buying bottles.

We have both bathrooms stocked with Method's Rain (or something like that). It's a great smell, and it's clear, so it would go with any bathroom.

I used some of the Claus Vorto soap that was in a friend's bathroom. I loved the smell so much I looked it up online when I got home. Then I realized it $20 for a 13 oz. bottle. Yikes! Guess I'll stick with my grocery store soap.

I end up using all the fancy shaped soaps I at Christmas in the obligatory office gift bath baskets for my guest bathroom. I have no idea what they smell like....but they are pretty.

I seriously need to start reading my posts before submitting them. 'I GET at Christmas.....'

I love nice soaps, but being expensive doesn't necessarily mean they have better ingredients (though pricier brands tend to use more subtle and complex fragrances). With that said, I am tempted to buy a bottle of Claus Vorto just for the gorgeous label and refill it with my inexpensive organic, all-natural, crunchy hippie stuff.

I've got the Trader Joe's Orange Blossom now! I've been stuck on it for a while. Even though it's just tj's, it still seems rather decadent ;) I fell in love with Mistral triple-milled soaps while working for Anthropologie,... Incredible! But far, far too expensive for me at this point.

I bought Equate honey and milk soap and it's my favorite for guests, and myself. It smells warm and yummy and luxurious but it's cheapity cheap!

The big square Marseille soap lasts FOREVER. It's not really more expensive in the long run.

Buying our groceries in France, we get Savon de Marseilles handsoap (the liquid usually). It's not the high-end fig or rose scented stuff in the glass bottle, but the supermarket brand. Still lovely. And we get the bag refills.

I remember particularly liking Kiss My Face's Pear handsoap -- and many guests wound up buying it too.

I love Dr. Bronner's peppermint bar soap. All natural and it lasts a long time. Plus, peppermint is an unusual scent and leaves your hands tingly and soft.
The liquid peppermint soap for the shower leaves your entire body tingly!

I like pine-cented soaps, so I usually stock up in the after-Christmas sales... Anthropologie, Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, etc., will usually have a variety of nice brands in limited edition "winter" soaps that go on steep discount in January. We've been using a bulk bottle of a Douglas Fir scented soap from Williams-Sonoma in a refillable glass dispenser for years now... it's extremely fresh but warm smelling. Thymes Home and Caldrea make lovely liquid soaps and Fresh bar soaps are delicious... but Bee & Flower sandalwood soaps from Chinatown or Mysore sandal soap from the Indian grocery smell almost as nice and cost a fraction as much! I always keep bar soap as well as liquid because I've noticed that some people (AHEM, MEN) seem to prefer it, and at least in the case of my boyfriend and dad, don't wash their hands properly with liquid soap. Sigh.

The "Wild Blackberry" soap---bar or liquid--from Mistral is one of my all-time favorites. Despite the name, it's quite floral, like violets, with a hint of musk and fruitiness.

I splurged on a whim a few months ago and bought the Savon de Marseille Liquid Soap in the cherry blossom scent. Its such a wonderful fragrance and I haven't gotten buyers remorse once since the purchase.

You that saying that only the rich can afford to buy cheap shoes? I think the same goes for soap too-good quality soap is well worth the money, not only because the texture and smell is good, but because it lasts so long. Really worthwhile.

@bepsf - I'm with you! I hoard all the good stuff for my own bathroom!

There's a soap in anthropologie that I love. It makes me want to take a bite out of it! But, the name escapes me.
