Roundup: Holiday Color Palettes

120108_xmas2.jpgWe spent the better part of our weekend considering holiday decorations. This is one of our favorite times of the year because you can really play and have fun with colors and decorations and it's all temporary. Yes we can be sticklers for tradition and often end up falling back on classic red and green, but sometimes when we see alternatives, like that pink and gold palette on last year's Blueprint Holiday Edition, we consider breaking out of tradition. Jump below for some alternatives to green and red:

120108_westelm.jpgSophisticated: Silver Christmas with white, silver, dark wood and natural texture from West Elm

120108_pink.jpgRetro Modern: pink and gold with shiny bits of white, lavender and silver from last year's Blueprint (rip).

120108_white.jpgScandinavian: white and pops of color all the way from Sweden and one of our favorite design bloggers Benita Larsson.

120108_turq.jpgMod Christmas: turquoise, red and white as inspired by fizfelt and mid century utah.

120108_red.jpgTarget Christmas: Red and white and sweets from Martha Stewart and Plum Party.

120108_whitechristmas.jpgAll White Christmas from the white company.

What colors are you sticking to this year?

I went with all gold and apple green. It's just a little different and doesn't clash with the colors in my apartment.

I want to do a black tree this year which apparently is so 2007. My apartment is mostly charcoal gray and I don't feel like doing a white tree.

I like to do red and silver with white and some light blue or turquoise accents. I find myself very attracted to red and it says home to me. Turquoise is such a fun accent to it and makes it a little less traditional.

It's probably a little too matchy-matchy, but I did my my tree and faux "mantle" in hits of pink and chartreuse on a basic silver-and-black approach to match my apartment's existing decor.

Going home, I always get the traditional golds, reds, deep burgundies, etc... so at school I've stuck to a fun pink, light blue, and green... much like the 3rd picture down with the white tree!

The red ornament in the center of the turquoise wreath comes in pink, green, and blue at Target. I got mine last year, but I saw them stocked up with them again this year!

White tree with pinks, teal, and gold. I have been making wreaths all week to make sure our house is as festive as possible. I'm fully embracing the kitschy this year.

Going with silver, white, pink, and spring green. Very retro/kitsch!

You know, I kinda dig the idea of a black tree. Sprayed with some opalescence and draped in pearls and crystals with shimmery white lights. Like the Christmas version of a gorgeous little black dress...

Silver tree adorned with candy colored ornaments. Most of the ornaments I made years ago when I couldn't find anyone who made vibrant yellow, pink, lavender, or other colored ball ornaments I was looking for. My daughter also added fairies butterflies and a little bird cage she found at Anthropologie.

I love the West Elm and Scandinavian styles. However, spending Christmases elsewhere leaves our decorating limited. Oh well, someday.

Hey AT'ers - I really am interested in a modern faux Christmas tree. Something white (similar to the ones pictured above) or silver (aluminum). Can you suggest some places (internet or actual stores) where I can look at /explore my options to purchase one of these...? Thank you!

I did a white tree with silver and gold balls. I found the 7.5 ft. tree at SAM'S club for $139. I have white garland on the stairway with just lights. It is fun to do the white, it is different than any of my friends and I love it!

Green tree, multi-color ornaments (heavy on teal and blues and coppers), featuring my collections of stars and snowflakes of all kinds. I want multi-color LED mini lights this year, but so far I have only seen strings of 25 which is just silly. "Everyone knows" you need at least 100 lights per foot of tree, so I need strings of at least 100. (If anyone has sources, I'd be happy to hear.)

im keeping it pretty traditional with red, lime green, white, and silver ornaments. i figure the lime is a little more modern that your kelly green or forest green. we got a real tree (a gorgeous noble fir) and white lights.

i like the traditional christmas colors- since its the only time i have them together in my home (plus its a change for me after years of my parents doing silver and blue christmas decor)!

i also really love the red, turquoise, and silver, if i ever get sick of my colors i can change out the lime for the turquoise.

EPS, I purchased my tree from the same site as that pink tree (pictured above) from Domino mag. I believe it's "tree topia.com?" Can't remember though. Anyway, they have a variety of colors and sizes and, if memory serves me correct, they come with or w/out lights.

I chose a 6.5' prelit white tree from Walmart for $35 (check out that great deal!) and pink ornaments! The rest of my apartment is done in pink, white, & silver. I even made my own silver topiary's out of styrofome & a dowel rod. I'm liking the feel of Christmas this year!

For the last few years it's been pink, gold and cream... now teal's starting to creep in.
