To Do: Shred Your Paper
Los Angeles

100208-shredder01.jpgAs we gear up for the Fall Cure, one of the things we know that we'll be focusing on is decluttering. Now that we've begun banking online, we can definitely get rid of a lot of paper, from old tax forms to ancient bank statements to unopened junk mail. While we own a shredder, the amount we're hoping to toss may be a lot more than our home model can accommodate...

That's why we'll probably check out the community shredding event in the Faircrest neighborhood at 5931 W. 18th St. Los Angeles, CA 90035 this Saturday morning from 9 to noon. Charging 35 cents per pound, a mobile shredder from Reduced to Shreds will mulch your paper to confetti while you watch. Items they won't accept? Newspaper, plastic items, carbon paper, or trash.

also, get a scanner and digitize the paperwork you won't need in hard copy. then recycle/shred away!

Nudik,

actually, shredded paper CAN be recycled, but in the economics of the recycled paper business, it is considered low grade (along with cardboard boxes). So probably better to have it done by a professional who then recycles the paper in bulk than mixing it in with "higher grade" (ie long fibre paper) in your regular recycling. Note to future shredders ... if you can, do it outside -- the dust created by shredding paper is terrible. The first time I used my shredder (which is a pretty good one), I didn't realize it until I was done and got up from sitting on the hardwood floor and saw there was a clean spot where I was sitting and the rest of the floor was covered in dust. I now let my shredding pile up a bit and take it all outside on the patio.

My shredder is set up on a table in my garage so I don't have paper dust in the house. Setting aside papers and shredding them at the end of the month helps me control my "stack" and prolongs the life of my shredder.
