Denmark 50

storefront-05-08-.jpgWe got a tip from Maxwell about a very cool looking store on Melrose called Denmark 50.

05-08-denmark50-1-.jpgThe rather large store looks to have a huge selection of some of the great Danish Designers.

Denmark 50 also has a restoration department, so if you have a Wishbone chair in need of new roping, this might be your solution.

We also like the Designer section on the website. You can click on a name and it gives a nice little bio for each of the Danish masters.

I love Denmark 50. They know what they have; and have priced accordingly. Translation: not the place for bargain-hunters. On the upside, they've done all the legwork and great restoration work for you; and the quality is very good. Call in advance for store hours as they aren't open everyday.

On a side note, their customer service isn't the friendliest. (I was thrown so much shade when I phoned about the price of a Verner Panton capiz chandelier: "Well, of course it costs $xxx. It's real, not West Elm." Maybe the guy who answered the phone was having a bad day. But still...)

Not friendly at all. On my second attempt to go to the store (not open the first time, no particular reason-I now see the comment above about calling), I inquired about their web adverstised restoration/reupholstering services and was told they only reupholster pieces purchased from their store. When I asked if they could recommend a resource for restoration of mid-century pieces, the ?saleswoman said she would ask the owner of the store who was out back. She re-emerged some minutes later saying he was "too busy" and I should just call some other time. What. Ever.

Denmark 50 has great stuff! (Hans Wegener, Finn Juhl, etc.)The owner is almost always there and he is so knowledgeable. I'm sure he gets all kinds of people calling asking for deals which is probably why he said what he did. If you know what he has, then you know everything is very reasonably priced. And if you don't see what you're looking for, chances are that he has it in his undergroud storage which is just next door. There are true gems there and people who collect Danish furniture know what great pieces he has. Customer service sometimes needs to be set aside when you're looking for special pieces like he has. But then again, we have bought multiple items from him and have never had a bad experience.

They do have nice stuff and I think the prices are fair given the condition. However, the owner is rude, rude, rude. I asked about desks (they're was only one on the floor) and waved me off with my hands and told me to go out back. I'm sorry, but if I'm going to spend $1000 , I don't want to be treated as if I'm a bother.

Phooey!

Floor Model at Buttercup is much, much nicer to do business with.
