apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

"Spaceless" by Sandy Lam

051608smallspace2.jpgBalconies are often under utilized spaces. Unfortunately, they're also usually pretty small and it's often hard to fit standard patio furniture. Designer Sandy Lam has come up with a concept we hope makes it into actual production. It's called "Spaceless" and is essentially a balcony decking system that has furniture built in!...

051608smallspace1.jpgCurrently there's a table and a bench designed. Both fold into the decking, which aloows for more space when not in use. Check out more of Sandy's work at her website. (via Small Space living, via Mocoloco)

Very clever. It gives a whole new meaning to eating off the floor.

I really can't believe that anyone who writes for a career doesn't know the difference between "balcony's" and "balconies." I see this mistake all the time at AT and it's downright embarrassing.

geez people! It's a little grammer mistake, not the end of the world!

It's a small, quick mistake that is easy to overlook in informal personal writings, but it should be a small, quick look-before-printing fix, easy for anyone who writes for a living in a (semi-?) professional setting, however casual the writing is supposed to appear. That's the embarassment.

As for the product: neat, but I'd prefer it if it just folded flat against the wall rather than being on the ground accumulating outdoor debris.

Bad grammar. Good product.

It's creative, but not all that new - It's been done on boats and inside RV's for years. The problem with this application is that it leaves a hole in the floor and it makes the framing for the deck overly complicated and therefore more expensive.

Folding furniture in a well-organized storage closet makes more sense to me.

"Balcony's" --- arggggh, one more time and we're going to grab pitchforks! :)

When I worked on an HGTV makeover show, the designer hung the folding tables on the walls of the balcony, which made much more sense, and was far easier to frame out.

Folding furniture against the wall also means less time walking all over your eventual eating surface.

I honestly don't get the big deal about the grammer, but maybe it's because I'm so totally not a writer! I'm a scientist, and everyone knows we don't know how to write :)

But regardless, about the product, I agree with most of you, good idea, not so practical.

Thank you for all the feedback. I have just created a website (http://www.sandylamdesign.com/spaceless/) to clarify some of the questions about this product, enjoy!
