"Squat" Module Benches by Vessel

101806squat1.jpgIn the recent September 2006 Martha Stewart, there was an interesting "good thing" regarding stacking benches. If you've been looking for bookshelves and have found that everything is either too big, too tall, or too wide (or not wide enough) for your space, consider stacking some benches. The "Squat" Module bench, designed by Vessel is a great example. It's compact enough to be a two-seater (perfect for a foyer) but if stacked, the small size also makes it ideal for a nightstand.

If stacked even higher, it becomes a great little bookcase. What makes the "Squat" even more practial is that the metal legs are open, creating a perfect spot for books or cds, as well as giving it additional support and stability. Available online here.($145)

I've seen articles on stacking benches in other magazines too -- Real Simple comes to mind -- but every time I see a photo all I can think is, "earthquake hazard earthquake hazard!!" I guess there are plenty of other things in my apartment which would be just as dangerous in a quake, but I can't bring myself to deliberately create hazards through stacking furniture.

hey lisa- excellent point- i definitely wouldn't stack benches higher than three units tall- but two or three i think would be ok- the martha stewart article also suggested screwing them together, which would be a wise idea...
