A Classic: Nakashima Straight Backed Chair

011508_nakashima.jpg

We just noticed the recently re-issued Nakashima Chair in the window at DWR. It reminded us of the smaller scale and simpler designed chairs we played with as little ones.

Designed by George Nakashima in 1948 for Knoll, we weren't all that surprised to read that he considered himself a Japanese Shaker. With it's simplistic shape and straightforward material, this chair doesn't try too hard to be something it's not and we appreciate that. We're trying to gear down and keep things simpler this year and this chair seems to be a nod to that concept.

We also love how sturdy it looks. Although it's obviously beautifully designed with gorgeous lines, etc, we have the distinct feeling that it wouldn't wobble if we sat in it. And that can be worth a million bucks.

The chair is available as of January 25th through Design Within Reach

I saw this in that window last weekend and did a double take. This is one of the most perfect chairs I've ever seen.
