Chair Couture: Recreated For Pazazz! and Pow!

Girard-couture-chair-2-.jpgWe have always loved the ladies in Lilly Pulitzer. It’s that east coast preppy chic that we are suckers for. Besides, anyone who can pull off Kelly green and frosted pink is okay in our book.

Enter Margaret Elman and her new line of furniture called Chaircouture. Margaret takes classic, vintage furniture and shocks them back to life with vivid fabrics, including our favorite, Alexander Girard. The final result is both whimsical and sexy…just like Lilly.

couture-3-.jpgNow, unlike classic designers and more like Lenny Kravitz and the rest of the new Glam-shlock…er, we mean glam-rock designers, some of the furniture is so specific that can already feel a little last season. That’s why instead of plunking down the big bucks, we recommend looking at the pictures for inspiration and then getting to the fabric store and creating your own furniture couture.

OMFUG. Love.

Good call on using them as an inspiration. (Now, how much per yard for the Sprouse Graffiti/Camo fabric from Knoll... Hmmm.)

Enrique, some of that fabric was on EBay a few days ago!

Woo! Now I'm feeling much better about plans to spraypaint the 1920s dining chairs. (But I'm now wondering if my plans for golden BEIGE are perhaps too dull and I should go straight for red.)

definitely, go straight for red.

Wow! I think Elman's chairs are fantastic - she's got a hell of a an eye. I'd never have thought to match those colors together. THAT's creative! I don't know what is "last season" about it -- it seems totally fresh to me.

Any idea on how to contact her?

You are right, Virgil. I tried unsuccessfully to re design my home and went into a modern look but felt I totally missed. I hired a designer and now my apartment has a "look" that is so totally unique it was so worth the cost of hiring a designer.

I love these pieces. She's really on to something.

Thanks Andrea -- I did email her and she is great -- totally professional -- thanks for her email address.

She emailed me and said she has more pieces she is getting ready to create. I can't wait!

I just saw her spread in the "What's Hot: People" Elle Decor's November issue. The write up on her is so fantastic.

I love it when the Elle Decor finds the new designers who "get it." And she's got it!

I really like what apartment therapy has said about "shocking" my furniture "back to life" and I encourage those who can't afford the authentic, designer pieces to do it themselves ... to embrace the old and make it new again. In my opinion, nothing is more beautiful than a fabulous, French antique - you just have to have the guts and the confidence in your own personal style to do something a little crazy with it... Bon chance, everyone!
