apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Chaise Hunting...

It just so happened to be located right up the street from me and the picture you are looking at is exactly what I saw. It was on the floor, had no legs, was totally stained and I am sure it had seen better days.

But I saw the full potential in it and knew it would fit perfect in my living room. I bought it and took it directly to my upholsterer.

So last Saturday I had it delivered and it really looks great.

Since there were no legs attached to it, I bought an extra set at Ikea. And from what the previous owner said, it was actually a chaise from Ikea that they no longer carry.

For all of you handy homeowners and DIY’ers out there that are looking for a sofa or a bed or even a dining table, take the time (if you can) to find the right piece. Don’t rush and be certain of what you are looking for. There are so many rescources available out there.

Make it custom to what your specifations are. Custom sometimes does not mean super expensive, if you are patient. With a little time and perseverance you are bound to find it. And if you still don’t know what you’re looking for, call a professional to help you!

Ummm-- I didn't want that to be the only comment. The chaise looks absolutely beautiful. The color is great.

It looks so good! I can hardly believe it's the same chaise. Wow. That's incredible.

I don't doing something custom, I just usually don't know where to go to get the custom job done for me.

Turquoise - would you mind sharing the name of your upholsterer?

Also, does anyone know of a good furniture maker? Looking to have a desk made. What about a cabinet maker?

Lara- I would prefer not to share my vendor information.

But as far as having a custom desk made you should check out Dokata Witzenburg.

Here is his information:

He can build anything!
Good Luck!

This is so on the money because I'm thinking of doing the same thing and have been looking for some time now. Now seeing your idea I know I'm on the right track. Thanks

i love your design philosphy and your style. i've seen this ikea piece in person (a friend has it) and it certainly doesn't look like this! really great job.

I think it is the falstbro chaise from Ikea. I have the sofa which I got in the as-is dept when it was discontinued. It seemed a good purchase due to it's clean lines, and I knew that I too would re-upholster it.

Vanessa/Turquoise, I understand that you are a professional designer, but I am disappointed by your unwillingness to share your resources. That seems antithetical to what I thought Apartment Therapy was about. I think one of the things that makes Domino magazine (and AT, for the most part) so great is its philosophy of "accessibility, not exclusivity" (http://asid-nyu-ce.org/news/nyt_article.html ).

Chris!
You through the guantlet down (oh, and nice chaise Vanessa/Turquiose).

I think this is a good subject for an "Open Thread": Name your fav' upholsterer! Especially since I'm looking for one (and I am not a design professional).

Chris- It has taken me quite some time to find a good upholsterer and that is one thing I don't feel comfortable giving out.
I had to go through so many to find the right person and if I give out his/her information (especially on this site) I would never get my items and then I have to go back to looking for some one new.

I DO though always give out lots of other information to the readers, about where to purchase things, great stores, amazing designers and contactors, resources, books and magazines etc.

And I even supply a designer dissection on this site that lists exactly where I have purchased everything in each room for my clients.

I dig being apart of this site because I can share all this information that I came across and I DO think I have been extremely generous with my willing to share information.

One upholsterer come on...
