LYX Furniture & Light WING Lounge Chair

atla111607-winglounge.jpg

Our friend Hannes just sent us the link to the LYX Furniture & Light WING Lounge Chair, the current apple of his home furnishing eye. Upholstered with open cell visco elastic memory foam and with an obvious nod to the Eames lounge chair with its curved teak veneer bent plywood shape, this is one sexy beast. Hannes and I promised each other we'd buy the other one of these if either us are fortunate enough to win the lottery. For now, I'll have to settle for making my way over to Twentieth, the only LA showroom of LYX's line, to give it a test ride and pretend I've already won.

I love the look, but the foam wouldn't make it 2 minutes in my house. I learned my cat loves to destroy foam when she had a moment alone with a memory foam bed topper. Not pretty, and thank goodness for sheets!

The Eames' cousin. I like it. But, it's hard to beat the original.

The problem with this is the same problem with the Eames--there's actually little lumbar support. You end up with your lower spine compressed. There's no real head support either, unless you're sitting well forward.

If you're 5'10" or taller, you won't have head support.
- If you're 5'5" or shorter, your knees will hit the front of the seat wood and probably not touch the ground.
- If you're older or have arthritis, you'll never get out of the chair that sits only 14 inches off the ground

Ever notice that in most of the ads for the Herman Miller chairs, the chair is empty?

Since the Eames lounge already exists, why do we need this??

I think this looks like a very bad, cheap knock-off of an Eames lounge.

Hi, I'm Michael Malmborg.. the designer of The Wing Lounge Chair. Thank you for the kind... and NOT so kind words. ;-)
Here my view on the design:
First: This is NOT an attempt to make another Eames Chair. The inspiration for this chair is my grand fathers old Wing chair. I wanted to make a 21st century take on that big hugging feeling you get from that kind of oversized chair that I experienced as a kid.
This is my responses to all of you:
SIHOBAN: The foam is covered by fine Swedish leather.
DESIGNSNOB: If they where ever related (and they are not) it would be the headstrong grand son.
PALMETTO: You are very right, and very wrong. I 'm using five kinds of density foams in this chair creating a hidden lumbar support, it's actually very ergonomic. And I'm 6'8" and get perfect head support. About size, also see comment below. But you are right about the edge hitting the knees if you are shorter... that's why you need the ottoman.
ORANGEJUICE: And I think the Eames Chair is absolutely fantastic... but the world would be a very boring place if there was just one take on everything. The taste is different. This is for a person who don't want another Eames Chair. And remember, the Eames Chair is very small... a lot of people, including me, don't fit in it. In Volume, the WING Chair is almost twice the size... an Eames Chair looks like it comes out of a doll house next to it.
SOUTHERNWAYFARER: Read all the above. However, I respect anyones opinion... taste is a fascinating thing.
And it's not cheap... it retails for USD 15000. This is the biggest bent wood char ever made in a single piece... the tool took almost 18 months to make. I also want to add that a number of WING Lounge Chairs has been sold to people who already had an Eames Chair!

Thank you for your time / Michael
