Holy Toledo we almost fell off our chair when we got the new Urban Outfitters catalog in the mail. We first thought the mid century styled couch was a styling prop, then we realized it's one of their new pieces of furniture.
At a shocking Ikea price point of $480, we're in love! The fabric looks good, the legs are just right, It looks like it's fairly well made [although we have not seen it or sat on it to check out the situation]. They have also added a great side table to match. Essentially we're doing the Snoopy dance until someone bursts our bubble and tells us they're all sold out.

So funny, I had the same reaction yesterday when I opened my mailbox. I ran online to find out more information on it, and found out that they won't ship this item to California!! I knew it was too good to be true for this Los Angeles resident!
Love it....BUT, the item description online says that they will NOT ship to California! What's up with that?
I wonder if a store in California could order it for you and you can pick it up?
I don't know if its the same thing at all but I used to work at Coach and we couldn't ship certain bags their because they contained, python, an endangered animal to California. So maybe the sofa has something that the state of California prohibits?
Hey, Left Coast dudes and dudettes:
The UO near my house in Greenwich Village has this in stock. The lines and dimensions are good, but couch strikes me as flimsy, and better to look at than to sit on.
I saw UO's fainting couch in the catalogue and was tempted, but after sitting on it, I decided it's probably fine for fainting but definitely inadequate for an energetic make-out session.
Me too! I had to pick up my chin off of the floor. What a great find - I'm thinking of picking one up for my spare room. I'm not that savvy when it comes to UO furniture quality, I've never owned a single piece of furniture from them, but I'm willing to give it a go at that price. Especially for a piece that won't be used daily.
Anyone else have UO sofa experience?
Holly
Tai your comment made me laugh. You're cute. Maybe there's a python hidden inside?
;)
I love this sofa, so called the company yesterday asking about California, and was told 'uh, maybe the truck doesn't go that far' (seriously, LOL). So I wrote the company and, while they haven't yet responded, when I checked their website this morning California HAS been removed as a prohibited ship to location.
This sofa IS able to ship to California, I called the 800 number to check, it was a typo on their site. Also, I called the NY store to ask about quality and its not there yet (?) so maybe you saw a different sofa. The sales person I spoke with at the 800 number told me it has a steel frame and hardwood front/sides/legs sounds pretty sturdy for $480! Also, the cover is removable for cleaning AND you can use it as a twin bed. Think I am going to risk ordering this online its exactly what Ive been looking for.
Over $600 shipped? I'd rather go vintage and have the real thing. Those legs look too thick and blocky for MCM.
This is the response I got from customer service.
Unfortunately that sofa is no longer available through the stores, website or catalog. I apologize for the inconvenience, but we do not have plans to reorder this item. If you require additional assistance, please feel free to email us.
Wierd! Maybe they thought I was talking about a different sofa? Thier Customer Service seems pretty inconsistent. I'm going to check out their website again.
I just checked the UO's website and it is listing this sofa as: Backordered, 4/9/2007
http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=28323&itemType=PRODUCT&iProductID=28323&crosssell=1
The small table is still available.
I just tried to order it online and it is already on backorder until April 9. The fact that it is already sold out and because of the current MCM lust I would think they manufactured a bunch; means it no longer appeals to me unless I immediately made it a funky tweed or barkcloth cover.
Also I still saw CA as one of the undeliverable states on the web page.
The real thing.

Their customer service emailed me, asking for more details, and when I went back to their website sure enough California was back ON the prohibited shipping areas again. Really strange behavior for a company, in sales, anyone have reliable experience ordering from them? Otherwise I think I'd rather take the picture to someone locally and have something custom made to fit my living room (and I don't need vintage here I need something that fits an oddly shaped room w/a corner fireplace).
Wow! Thia sofa is the bomb! UO never disappoints when it comes to trendy and hip. I simply MUST have one!
Alexa's right, inconsistent, here's the email I got and no mention of not reordering:
The sofa can be shipped to California. However it is on backorder until 4/9/07. There was a typo on the website but it has been corrected. I apologize for any inconvenience you may have been caused.
If you require additional assistance, please feel free to email us at service@urbanoutfitters.com.
Mike and other friends:
This very sofa is downstairs at the following UO location:
526 AVENUE OF THE AMERICAS
NEW YORK, NY 10011-8405 (map)
(646) 638-1646
Now, if you call, will the person who answers the phone know that it's downstairs? Possibly not, given the kind of help willing to work for minimum wage or slightly higher. But the sofa is there - the lines are great - and the quality, in my opinion, is eh. (Keep in mind that I'm not someone who dismisses out of hand Ikea and other modestly priced goods.)
i just popped into the UO in Santa Monica and checked out the couch--like the photo, it looks great from a distance, but is really just a few cushions laid across a frame (similar to the construction of a platform bed's platform), and a metal frame in the back with the back cushions leaning against that.
although people keep mentioning the great price, i would rather pay a bit more and get an actual sofa, not just some cushions laid onto a wood and metal frame.
