Books Shelve by Mark Reigelman

We're sure some book purists may find this blasphemous, but we think the simple design of this "Books Shelve" by Mark Reigelman to be quite clever. It's only a prototype, but you can find out more info and see some of Mark's other design ideas on his website. (via Pan Dan)

It is kind of funny to see a board with some notches cut out of it described as a "prototype." If this isn't a DIY project I don't know what else is, but of course the thinking behind it is a different matter. . .

As someone who makes and loves books I can tell you that this is NOT the way to treat them. While clever, the idea of leveraging the weight of the book against a sharp angle pressed into the cover makes me wince. And the cup of water is simply gratuitous book-violence.

An example of how design needs to move away from being clever, and back into function-oriented.

I love books, too, and I do see how this idea can be adapted without being sacrilegious. Why not use weird old books that you find in your home, in "free" boxes around the city, or in used book stores? That way, you're recycling an old book that would otherwise end up in the garbage (unless you were planning on re-reading your old Girl Guide handbook or your circa-1991 astronomy textbook), and you're doing it in a neat way.

I mean, it's obvious that this isn't being proposed as a serious book storage solution. Why not have fun with it as a piece of art?
