Crate and Barrel have just released a new modular system of shelving which they're calling "Checkers." This is the latest addition to their recently launched "ready to assemble" collection. Checkers is basically an easy to customize program of stackable shelves, that come in 2, 3, or 5 unit cubes. They also have alternating open and closed off backs. What I really love are the more substantial looking, clean lined, metal base units that come in single, double or triple cube widths. These could be great for all kinds of solutions.

i like the way most of their stuff looks. not mindblowing, but cute enough. but when i go to the store it seems like the furniture is shakey & about to fall apart. i loved this one desk, but it was all wobbly.
anybody have their stuff? is it sturdy at all? maybe that store's stock room just can't put things together.
I have most of the Havana collection from CB and a ton of other little things.
I assembled the Havana hutch and buffet, coffee table, end table, and wine bar by myself. They are all pretty sturdy and have a good weight to them.
Only the hutch was slightly difficult to put together 100%, but even without a couple dowels in the top, it is still pretty rock solid...
I have plenty of confidence in their products...
The Havana collection that Chrys owns is solid mahogany. Some of the ready to assemble pieces that are usually on the floor at the store are pieces that have been there since it was first introduced. Therefore, if a ready to assemble piece has been out for a year, most likely that piece has been abused like no other (moved from one side of the store to another...over and over and over again). Anyhow, I only know this because I work for a C&B store. =)
I have a couple of very tall shelf units that I assembled myself. They're very sturdy. In fact, I just moved last weekend, and my friends and I were remarking on how heavy and sturdy they are, especially when compared with IKEA stuff (not exactly a ringing endorsement, to be sure). I love C&B.
