Look! Ala by Valcucine Flip Up Wall Unit

atla-052008-cucine01.jpgJust because something's designed for one room, does that mean it has to be used in there? We don't think so. We were reminded of how much we love the Ala Flip Up Wall Unit by Valcucine when we visited with friends during ICFF.

atla-052008-cucine02.jpgCombining the open space shelving we love here at AT with a closed door system (good for those of us whose cabinets are not quite so neat), we could see this finding a place in many rooms apart from the kitchen it was designed for, any place where a cabinet might be required but architecture limits the room needed for swing out doors. Designed without springs or hinges, they're quiet as well as attractive. Available in a variety of finishes and laminates.

Although I like the cabinet design, I'm confused with your comment.
If there wasn't space in a room for a pair of swinging doors, how would there be room for a single giant flip-up door?

bepsf:

as in the picture above, there is no room to swing open doors, but there is room for one that flips up.

Uh, wait -- if there's no room to swing out, there wouldn't be room to sing up either.

This is very clever. It's nice to have another option for storage in a small space.

I like it, but I'd hit my head on it when it's up as that's quite a wingspan. I think I'd got for a roller blind in this situation.

bepsf,

i can think of a lot of situations (my bathroom being one of them) where swing out cabinet doors would hit other doors, people in the bathroom, etc. i've seen it in action and no one in this family -- very tall husband, daughter or mother -- hit their head or came close. i think it looks nice up (unlike cabinet doors which just don't) so leaving it up whilst the cabinet's in use isn't the issue it might be with regular cabinet doors and it's a lot sleeker than a roller blind.

cheers!
